Update 11/28/22: Has been increased to $20/2,000 (or $15/1,500). Hat tip to Davis
The Offer
- Rakuten is offering $20/2,000 when you sign up for a subscription with USA Today.
Get Unlimited Digital Access to Your Local Network Publication for Only $1 for 6 Months. + $10.00 Cash Back
If you don’t have a local network in your area, you can subscribe to the All Access Digital package for $4.99 per month.
The Fine Print
- Cash Back is not available on print subscriptions.
- Cash Back will be automatically added to your Rakuten account tomorrow.
Our Verdict
Nice little moneymaker of either $5.01 or $9, depending if your area qualifies for the $1 deal. Maybe some will find the subscription useful as well (?). Hopefully it’s easy to cancel after the first month payment if you decide not to keep the subscription.
New Rakuten users can find our referral link in this post (the current signup offer is at $30/3,000 right now).

Done. I’ll report back on how fast they payout – Sounds easy to cancel though. Their help section states “You can cancel your USA TODAY subscription online within Account Management. Or, you can cancel by calling Customer Service at 1-800-872-0001 and saying, “discontinue delivery”.”
Tracked fine initially, also didn’t cancel yet but just noticed my Rakuten balance went down when I opened it a few days ago. Saw the comments below apparently I’m not alone. Submitted a claim which was resolved (only because I had a screenshot), I had deleted the email confirmation after it tracked.
“Rakuten has yet to receive credit for this USA TODAY Network order, but we went ahead and added the Cash Back for this purchase to your account.
Please note that for future Cash Back inquiries, we may need to submit them to the store for review, which can take a little while to resolve.”
I got an email from Capital One Shopping offering $30 for this. Not sure if it is targeted. I went ahead and did it, and later saw people are getting cash clawed back on Rakuten. Oh well, I’ll let it ride, 30:1 payout is worth a risk. I had my $20 clawed back on Rakuten, but it was automatically added back after I submitted a ticket (apparently on a provisional basis, if I am reading the email from Rakuten correctly).
Got credited $16 from COS today. I submitted a ticket asking for the remaining $14, but a win either way.
I have gotten the cash back clawed back same as a few others reported below. The cash back simply disappeared from my Rakuten account. It’s time to stop promoting this offer as it seems USA Today is simply a dishonest company.
At least Rakuten support put back the credit although they implied they are paying it out of their own pocket.
My 2,000 MR just got clawed back by Rakuten for this deal and now it’s showing 0 MR. Maybe worth posting an update so others can check if theirs was clawed back too? I haven’t canceled or anything, but I did do the $1/6 months deal.

Clawed back here too, haven’t cancelled either.
Same
Mine was clawed back as well and I hadn’t canceled the subscription
Capital One shopping has this offer for $30 cashback with subscription. I did it and tracked after a day.
Made purchase yesterday for the $1/6 months. Nothing posted and no confirmation email, so submitted missing cash back request this morning. Automatic 2000 MR added to Rakuten.
Did the $1 offer from pop up last night. Shopping trip registered but nothing tracked, no email, etc.
Will update when I see it post
Hadn’t posted, so I went to help and submitted ticket request. Added 20 bucks immediately. Nice
Not expired though it is down to $10.
didn’t work for me even though i used the browser extension for it. did the $1/6 months
submitted a missing cashback claim and it immediately gave me the $20. never done that before so not sure how much i can trust it but impressed w rakuten for that if it stays
Has anyone signed up for this today? I tried to sign up for the $1/week plan, but on the checkout page it shows that the total is $52. Does it charge you the full $52 immediately as if you’re paying the full year up front? Or is the first charge actually only $1?
If you wait on the landing page, a popup with a $1/6 months Cyber Week special comes up. That’s what I signed up for today. I’ll have to wait to confirm the cashback though I’m confident Rakuten will award it if it doesn’t post automatically.
$15 CB posted as expected.
