Call Discover Via Phone To Increase Your Chances For Credit Limit Increase

Getting a credit limit increase (CLI) with Discover can be tricky, you can use the online form but this is not always available. We recently learned about a new trick that can improve your chances of getting a CLI. Here is how to do it:

  • Call the number on the back of your card and follow the prompts (should be Option 4 ‘more options’ then option 3 ‘credit line increase’)
  • Enter in all of the request information
  • You’ll either be instantly approved for a credit limit increase if not it will say something along the lines of “more information is needed, transferring your to a customer service representative”
  • Hang up before the representative comes on the phone
  • Wait
  • You should receive a credit limit increase without a hard pull being done

Obviously this does not work 100% of the time, but it seems to work more often than using the online credit limit increase Discover offers (often this is not available).

Having a balance on your card when you request a credit limit increase seems to increase your chances.

This does not mean you should rack up a balance just for this purpose, just that you might be better leaving the balance on there until you request the increase. Make sure you pay your card off in full before the due date to avoid any interest charges.

This tip could be useful for those who got the Discover it Miles with a small credit limit and are worried about cycling that limit multiple times per month.

Doesn’t work, a live person answers the phone.

I also have 7% overall utilization and zero negatives on my report. Thanks Discover for nothing.

This method does not work at all. You get transferred directly to an account manager.

Discover is impossible and does not like to give credit limit increases. 740 FICO score here, and have $12k-$22k limits on all of my other cards. Had Discover 2 years and stuck at 4k for almost the whole time. They are not worth my spend n or my time.

Got the card in Sep 2015. Had increases in November, February and April from 9500 to 13500 to 17500 to 19000. Happy with discover. Spent nearly 15K in last 6 months. Card utilization is 20%

No, I’ve had my account for five months. I think since my utilization is 70 percent may be a bit too high. Gonna make a payment to put the balance below 30 percent and keep it there!

Tried the method, and it doesn’t work because option 3 directly takes you to an account manager.

Maybe because I have the IT card. But I tried calling the 1-800-Discover and the IT 1-800 number as well.

CR wrote in response to my SM question that a CL increase could be requested once the account had been open 3m.

If you have an It card, you go right to a person. Maybe people should call 1-800-Discover?
