True Story –
When I was 18 I rented a car from Hertz I paid for two weeks and being busy with work ended up keeping it 17 days. I brought it in with the keys, unfortunately my card declined for the additional amount plus fees and they refused to accept the car back. The counter rep handed me back the keys and told me I had to keep it until I could pay. (This was in California)
So I kept it another 2 weeks being young and was told to keep it. After the two weeks I got fed up with the seemingly never ending situation and contacted corporate. I throughly explained the situation to them and they said that the overdue would likely go to collections but that they’d pick up the car.
I made sure to get the date, the towing company and where they were taking it which was to the Ontario airport.
About 8 days later 10 police cars show up to my house, arrest me and take me to jail for “embezzlement” (not joking). Spent days in the van nuys jail being questioned by detectives about where the rental car was. I throughly explained what happened that I had tried to return it, that I contacted corporate that it was taken to the Ontario Airport and the name of the Towing company. Apparently the manager of the individual location was calling the police station every day to inquire as to what was being done about his “stolen” car. He didn’t bother to check their internal system and see it was picked up and in their possession because he obviously kept calling. After finally confirming all the details I was let go from jail didn’t see a judge, no attorney, no DA nothing just me detectives and a cell for 3 days all due to Hertz’s incompetence.

Thanks for sharing. Seems consistent with the few stories VFTW had listed and damn f*ed up. “Keep it until you can pay” is rather ridiculous, akin to a credit card issuer not accepting minimum payment until the balance is paid in full, just so that they can keep stacking the interest up. So sorry to hear that this happened to you and I wish corporations that do shit like this are ultimately all held to justice.
My AA redemption to Australia had to be canceled (for obvious reasons) so I need to find something to do with the points (besides a domestic coach or “armchair” first class flight) before the value goes down. Still not comfortable taking an overseas trip quite yet, though.
Many AA flights are already priced as Anytime awards anyway.
Really pleased to hear about the ANA offering. I have some miles tied up with them and a trip that was cancelled due to COVID. Want to try to book something for the Fall now in hopes of being able to use them. Good to know if I can’t, I can easily cancel.
Guess I should be glad that my encounters with Hertz were limited to a defective car that was a freeway hazard and a double charge that took mere 8 months to resolve.
Crap. The AA miles still have a decent value and their devaluation is certainly not welcome. Those stories about Hertz are amazingly ugly.
Fuck you Hertz!!!!
jordan?
Go fuck yourself, copycat Mike D
All these stories deserve my outrage except the ANA one.
The FrequentMiler article is just quoting TPG quoting a rumor from the president of AAdvantage. How many degrees of speculation of this?
Good grief that Hertz article is like tin foil hat central. Sovereign citizens unite!
Hertz has been my go to but I also believe that they can be shitty. I was once pulled over because the car I was renting was reported as stolen. The car was reported to be stolen in NH while I rented it in NJ. The cops wouldn’t believe me even when I showed them the rental agreement. I was sitting in the car for over 2 hours till they got a confirmation that it was in fact not stolen. I still remember this like it happened yesterday (actually occurred about 5+ years ago).
