Reminder: You Can Upgrade To The Chase Sapphire Preferred/Reserve From Chase Slate/Freedom Cards

Chase is currently offering some temporary benefits for the Chase Sapphire Reserve & Preferred. The biggest is the ‘Pay Yourself Back’ feature that allows you to convert Chase Ultimate Rewards points for 1.25¢/1.5¢ per point for the following purchases:

  • Grocery Stores
  • Dining (includes restaurants, takeout, and eligible delivery services)
  • Home improvement stores, such as Home Depot and Lowe’s

Yesterday we looked at whether it made sense to upgrade from the Chase Sapphire Preferred to the Chase Sapphire Reserve. It’s also important to remember that Chase Freedom, Chase Freedom Unlimited & Chase Slate cards can all be upgrade to the Chase Sapphire Preferred/Reserve cards. Your card needs to have been open for at least 12 months before a product change of this type is allowed, no hard pull is done, you keep your credit history and your Chase 5/24 status is not changed either. You do need a $5,000 credit limit for the Preferred and $10,000 for the Reserve.

At this stage there seems to be conflicting reports of whether a $450 or $550 annual fee will be charged when upgrading to the Chase Sapphire Reserve, so it’s worth checking before completing this upgrade. Remember that the $300 travel credit on the Sapphire Reserve is much easier to use at the moment as grocery store and gas station purchases will be credited.

I called, but was told that the annual fee would be $550. They mentioned that they were allowing folks to use $100 from their travel credit to reduce the annual fee to $450. Should I HUCA? Has anyone had any recent reports of getting the annual fee reduced to $450? What did they say exactly?

I tried it but no go, I just got the same reply that annual fee would be $550 for upgrades.

I have 3 Chase Freedom cards. CL’s are $5k, $5k, and $12.5k. Based on the 90 day back rule, I would like to PC a specific Freedom card that happens to only have the $5k CL. Do you think I can move the CL from the $12.5k card to this card, so that would then allow me to upgrade to CSR, and then I can cash in points for the old groceries purchases?

Yes. Just ask to move 5k from the card with the 12.5k limit to the card with the 5k limit when you upgrade.

I got the CSR in Oct’18 and DD’d on the travel credit before PC’ing to CF in Nov’19.
I’ve had a CFU since Feb’17 and am wondering if I can PC it to have a CSR (so completely separate account from the other that was PC’d). If I do the AF again, does anyone know if I’m eligible for the travel credit on the new PC that’s only ever been a CFU?

If you won’t make the signup bonus on the CSP but you have a large pool of UR, make sense to upgrade to CSP?

I think it makes more sense to charge more months’ spend at grocery stores and home improvement stores (buying the products the two of them sell, plus merchant GCs, plus VGCs if you must), and then covering a good chunk of them with UR.

Question: I am hearing some people getting upgraded for $450 and a lot more for $550, either from freedom or freedom unlimited or sapphire or sapphire preferred to CSR. I just called forCSP to CSR and fee we’d be $550, renewal in December. I have more than 10k limit and had this card for 5 years.

What is the logic for getting $450 upgrade fee?
Who ever got $450, cd you please give details?

I don’t know if Slate can be directly upgraded to CSR, but I do know it can be PCed to Freedom so should be possible (if only indirectly).

I upgraded from Slate to CSR a few days ago without any issues, instant conversion. The only issue I am having is that Lyft doesn’t recognize it as CSR for the free Lyft Pink membership

Have you tried uninstalling the app and reinstall – then adding the card?

Chase’s backend for Doordash and Lyft leaves a lot to be desired.

I would be hopeful that after some time passes and whatever system Chase and Lyft use to communicate with each other updates, Lyft will recognize that it’s a CSR. I would try again in a week or so, if it still doesn’t work then after your first billing cycle as a CSR closes, etc.

Can you have multiple CSRs? Like one current CSR, then upgrade a freedom to a CSR?

Milestomemories did a post recently with data points that you can do so.

What is the advantage of having more than one CSR at the same time?
