Reports: Product Changing to Citi Custom Cash Coming Soon

Update 7/21/21: Citi Now Allowing Product Changes to the new Citi Custom Cash Card (Preferred, Dividend, Expedia, Etc.)

A lot of people are wondering whether it’s possible to product change existing Citi cards to become the new Custom Cash card. You won’t get the $200 signup bonus by going this route, but some people prefer not having a new card and just product changing instead.

Readers who have tried were told it’s not possible. However, multiple readers report being told by Citi reps that product changes will become available at a later date, either June 18th or sometime in July/August.

Assuming this does happen, it should be possible to even product change cobranded cards to become a Custom Cash card, as we’ve seen with other cards.

Update 6/14/21: Another report suggests that product changing will become available in mid-July, but that it won’t be possible to product change from Double Cash to Custom Cash since they are the same product line.

Tried to convert Citi DC to Citi CC via chat on 10/1/21. Still not allowed to. Was told to try again in a couple billing cycles.

Tried to convert double cash to custom cash today and they tried redirecting my call to start a new application. I said that I only want to convert an existing card and they said that isn’t an option right now. In June, they told me to call back in July and in July they told me to call back in August. Now they don’t recommend any specific timeframe for follow up.

I product changed my Double Cash to Rewards+ on July 20. Tried to immediately PC again from that to Custom Cash, but the customer service rep I dealt with wasn’t able to do it for me (despite DPs on here saying it was possible). So now I have to wait until after Sept 8, which is the last day for me to “reverse” the PC from R+ back to DC. I will report back on Sept 9 and see if I could finally get to the Custom Cash.

I suspected that we would not be able to PC from DC to CC even on Aug 1, regardless of what CSRs said. Peculiar that Citi allows PCs from many other cards to CC, but not the DC (either a “same family” BS rule, or: Citi recognizes that their popular DC product is not as enticing as it was in ~2015, now that there are more/better 2% cards such as WF Active Cash, and wants to force us to stay on DC).

Yeah, no dice yet. A couple of days ago, on my Citi dashboard there’s this message in a little red box under my Double Cash account, that had changed from “This account is in the process of being converted” to “This account is closed”. So I tried again to PC R+ to CC at that time, still told it is still in the process of converting and can’t be done until the conversion is finalized Sept 8.

Was able to convert reward+ card to custom cash a week ago, rep at that time told me to check back on DC on aug to convert it too. Tried to convert one of my DC to custom but failed today. Previous rep made it sound like it is possible to get more than 1 custom cash card. Hoping to get one more custom cash, have no need for two DC.

Thanks for the DP. How long did you have the Rewards+ account for, before doing the PC?

I believe I had reward+ for about 3-4 years, the card was previously Citi Forward before it got discontinued and was “forced” change to reward+.

I called last week and the agent told me I would be eligible to convert my DC to the CC on July 27th. I called today and of course they told me my account still wasn’t eligible. Some agents have told me starting August 1st I should be allowed and others have told me I can do it after my next statement closes (aug. 15th). So clearly no one knows what they’re talking about. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I was told id be sent an email when I become eligible but who knows if thats even true.

Called today to product change the DC to the CC. They said it was unavailable for my account. I pressed them on whether it was a case by case basis, or whether it applied to the DC generally. They said it depended on the account itself, and that it was showing unavailable for me.

Tried again just for s**** and giggles. No dice, but the chat agent did tell me this, verbatim: “Since both the Citi Double cash and the Citi Custom cash card are cash rewards cards so they are not available for conversion to each other.” That actually seems probable given the current state of affairs.

Data Point. Successfully converted a Thankyou preferred to custom cash. All the current thankyou points (did not even know I had any. It was a literal sock draw card) will be transferred to the custom cash card. Account number will remain the same

tried again over chat. Still not available. Seems like they are willing to PC from legacy cards, but not more current cards.

Converted Citi Dividend successfully to Custom Cash. Outstanding cash back was converted to TY Points at a rate of 1 point/cent.
