[Confirmed, Now Live] American Express To Launch ‘Cash Magnet’ Credit Card (Chase Freedom Unlimited Competitor)

Card now live, more information here.

Update 05/09/18: This card will be called cash magnet.

American Express is rumored to be launching a competitor to the Chase Freedom Unlimited card. The card basics are as follows:

  • 1.5% rewards dollars on all purchases with no cap
  • No annual fee

I’ve filed this under rumor because we don’t have any official confirmation, but I’m 99% sure this will be happening. Overall this card isn’t super attractive, you’ve already got the American Express Blue Business Plus offering 2x points on all purchases, it does have a $50,000 spending cap and is a business card. Another option would be the AmEx Everyday Preferred card, this offers 1x on all purchases but you get a 50% boost (making it 1.5x on all purchases) if you make 30 purchases within a month. That card does come with an annual fee of $95. Also keep in mind this new card earns rewards dollars and not Membership Rewards points, there are plenty of cards that offer 2% cash back or more on all purchases with no caps.

It’ll be interesting to see what sign up bonus if any will come with the card. If I was making predictions I’d guess we’d see a bonus of $200 at card launch. Or maybe we will see something like double cash back first year? Personally I’d prefer American Express to launch a competitor to the Chase Freedom card with rotating 5% categories but I certainly won’t complain if this new card has a decent sign up bonus.

So they’re basically releasing US Bank’s Cash 365 with rewards that post more slowly and a redemption threshold. I’ll pass.

Cash Magnet is a terrible name. A search on the Internet basically returns a bunch of scams/shady businesses.

Hahaha, wierd name I think they’re gonna change the name eventually lol. But yeah, my US Bank Cash 365 and Cash Plus, could redeem anytime even if its 1c lol. I need cards like that, not when I hit an increment of $20 or so, its my money.

So they will release a Capital One Quicksilver. But the Quicksilver has no FTF and can actually be accepted broadly internationally. And has no min redemption.

And can be redeemed immediately after transaction post compared to 2 statement cycles with AMEX

“Cash Magnet”

Wow, what a name (and not in a good or bad way, I’m just surprised). I sort of expected Amex to at least partially follow the branding philosophy of their “Blue Cash” family, but “Amex Cash Magnet” sounds so far removed from their usual products that I’m not sure how they even came up with this name. Sounds more like Capital One or Discover, tbh.

Personally, I think it sounds more than a little gimmicky. Now if it were really literally a magnetic metal card that you could stick in a gutter to fish for coins…

If it’s anything like the Blue Cash Everyday, you need at least $20 to cash out. Not an issue for some people, but if you don’t put much spend on the card you’re end up stuck with Reward Dollars on the card with no way to get them out.
