[Confirmed] Barclays To Improve Aviator Benefits

Update 2/20/19: Reddit user utb040713 was told it’s not currently possible to downgrade to the no AF version, but that a new no AF version would be launched in mid-March. If that’s correct then that is likely when we see other changes. Obviously customer service reps are often wrong, but still interesting given the other information we know.

Update 10/27/18: This has now been confirmed. When sending out letters regarding the loss of the EQD earning opportunity being removed (more on this tomorrow) they specifically reference enhancements coming in 2019. See picture below. hat tip to reader Jun Y

Reader Kasey C recently called Barclays to see if they would give them a retention offer (something everybody should be doing). They were able to get the annual fee waived and a statement credit of $100 if $1,000 was spent per month for the next three months. What’s really interesting is that the representative stated that Barclays is currently reviewing the benefits of the card and are expecting to improve the benefits come next spring. They weren’t able to provide specifics, but it would focus on making the card more rewarding for every day spend.

I have no idea how likely this rumor is to be true, it comes from a customer service representative and they often don’t have the best intel. Although retention reps are usually higher up that offer customer facing reps and are given more information/ability to resolve issues with points/offers than other reps. Currently the Aviator earns at the following rates:

  • 2x miles on American Airlines purchases
  • 1x miles on all other purchases

I can see them changing that to:

  • 3x miles on American Airlines purchases
  • 1.5x miles on all other purchases

Personally I still wouldn’t use the card for every day spend, but I suspect it would be useful for some cardholders.

I know this thread is old but current dp regarding aviator red, just told by csr that white card not currently an option, no retention offer (very minimal post sub spend, but renewed 1yr in hopes that would help). Also, blue not available, only upgrade to silver, pay 99, or cancel.

@DOC Have you heard anything about the new no AF version that the reddit user utb040713 mentioned?

I called and asked about it and no one had an idea of a revamp.

Just tried to downgrade and was told there isn’t a no-fee version. I was offered 2,500 miles to keep.

I just called as the AF recently hit and asked for a downgrade. My wife and I had our second child last month (no lies) which usually got me whatever I wanted for fee waivers, etc. first time around. Nothing this time & no downgrade option either. I called after 5pm PST so I thought maybe I got an un-empowered rep, but after some Googling, here I am leaving a DP. Hopefully they will get a no AF version soon or be able to waive the fee again, but I’m not holding my breath. I got my 10k points on the last statement, so I’m not hurting too bad – I know I saw recently the 10% miles back on a redemption feature was toast for the Citi AA cards, but do we know if the 10k miles are still safe for future years?

William,

I saw this posted on FlyerTalk in the “Barclays AAdvantage Aviator PERSONAL Card – now 60K” thread back on 1/26…

“Hard to say for sure because there is an AA Aviator Red benefits revamp coming in another month or so (one rep gave me a Mar 1 date, not sure if that’s the date they would kick or just be announced).”

They offered me that same retention offer when I PC from arrival+ to barclay cash rewards. I spoke with another rep later and he denied that I had the offer so I didn’t bother spending 1k for 3 months. Maybe I should have darn

DP: Called today (10/29) to downgrade to no-annual-fee version, and they said that option “isn’t available currently.” No retention offers either. I have one month before my AF, so I will call again next month, but Barclays seems pretty damn stingy right now.

I remember the days when the Chase Club card was one of the very few that offered 1.5 miles/dollar…
