[Rumor- Update] MGM & Hyatt Partnership To End Midyear

Update 1/25/23: Looks like what is ending is status matches with other competing casinos.

Flyertalk user 777 global mile hound was informed that starting June it will no longer be possible to match status. In addition they were told any status that was from previous matching would be removed on July 1, 2023.

It’s always difficult to know how reliable this sort of thing is from a customer service representative. It helps that this is a trusted user on Flyertalk and also that they were talking to a lead support manager of reservations when they received this information.

Received an email with the subject line “Important Update about Our Relationship with MGM Rewards” from Hyatt.

We are writing to inform our World of Hyatt Members that the strategic relationship between MGM Rewards and World of Hyatt is ending on September 30, 2023.

World of Hyatt members who have tier matched into MGM Rewards between February 1, 2023, and July 14, 2023 will retain their MGM Rewards tier status until January 31, 2024. After January 31, 2024, World of Hyatt members must achieve or maintain the applicable MGM Rewards tier in accordance with the MGM Rewards program terms to be entitled to any such related benefits.

MGM Rewards members who have tier matched into World of Hyatt between March 1, 2023, and July 14, 2023, will retain their World of Hyatt tier status until February 29, 2024. After February 29, 2024, MGM Rewards members must qualify for World of Hyatt elite status in accordance with World of Hyatt program terms and conditions.

as an fyi, if you want to get the hard rock in vegas (Mirage) they are status matching with MGM. their gold and platinum matches to their icon status. this gives you no resort fees and they give you $100 in points for food when they match you (points valid for 6 months) they said the match will last a year. though my card had a 2/23 expiration and when i asked, the rep said their software wont go past feb 23 for status but it will automatically extended till 2024

Matching is ending, but if you’ve already matched, when does that status expire?
Looks like MGM renews program Feb 1, so does that imply Feb 1 2024?
Any reason to go through “opt in” to match again Feb 2, 2023 or May 31, 2023?

This is sad news for me, as I approach Marriott Platinum lifetime status, I was looking to join the Hyatt Globalist family and using MGM was going to play a big part.

Now that Vegas is booming again, they don’t need/want people who are simply loyal to non-Vegas properties getting all the perks that people who are loyal to Vegas properties are getting – free rooms, comped resort fees, etc.

I’ve got a couple acquaintances that work at a few properties in Vegas (that I won’t name) saying that some of their most obnoxious guests are people with elite status in national hotel chains that come and expect to be treated like royalty in Vegas, and then complain when the red carpet isn’t rolled out for them.

They are to a point where just handling guests from their own rewards programs is overwhelming, without adding in all the national-hotel-chain elites that just hop from hotel to hotel wherever they can get the most free/comped stuff.

I got Icon status and free $100 at the Mirage (now Hard Rock) via status match, which I got from a status match…the carousel ain’t over yet.
