The Offer
- Safeway and affiliates stores are offering a gas discount of up to $1 off per gallon when you use fuel points.
The Fine Print
- Valid 2/26/20 – 3/10/20.
Our Verdict
From what I’m told, they usually just allow $.20 discounts on gas with their fuel program which isn’t terribly useful. For these few weeks, they are allowing discounts up to $1 which is useful. Hopefully there’ll be some gift card deals to rack up points.
Hat tip to reader JJ
if they were to bring back fuel pts earning from GCs purch, that will be more useful or relevant
it’s been $1/gallon in Oregon for years
got 90 cents per gallon off tonight on about 16.5 gallons, in Reno. also took advantage of the Staples offers stacking with Chase and Amex. and confirmed my suspicion that the local auto shop was trying to rip me off on the brakes. still 5 mm according to Lexus. saved another $1000 there by not being the dullest tool in the shed. auto shops that think they can rip women off really make me angry!
not sure what getting gas has to do with brakes, but you only need to change your brake pads when the warning pins start to rub and it makes a terrible screeching noise, then you know it is time to change them. They do this to clueless men too.
totally off topic but it’s pretty hard to accurately estimate pad thickness without taking them off the car, and 5mm is getting close to change time anyway – 4 or 3mm depending on who you ask, so one woman’s ripoff is another’s preventative maintenance.
On topic, I don’t see how this is any different than BAU. You get $1/gal at Safeway and “max” (whatever they will let you get) at Chev/Tex.
The difference is that for this limited time offer they increased the “max” at Chev/Tex from $0.20/gal to $1/gal.
I thought it’s always up to $1/gallon. Maybe it’s regional.
It is always up to $1/gallon if you go to a Safeway gas station, instead of a branded gas station. And the prices are lower, too.
It’s up to $1/gallon for me at Exxon (which has the same gas price as other stations in our town.) And there’s no safeway gas station in our town.
It’s up to $1/gallon at my local Chevron (that is easily 20 cents more expensive than a nearby Arco station).
There are no Safeways with gas station in the area.
I mostly use my Safeway points for grocery discounts these days. Most local driving is electric.
This is useless.
The regular rate is 0.2c / gallon per rewards point. Safeway branded stations allowed redeeming 5 points per transaction (up to 25 gallon). Chevron branded stations allowed only redeeming one point. Now you can redeem 5, but with the rate is the same 0.2c / gallon.
Because of the 25 gallon limit, the max benefit you can get per point is $1.25. You’re screwed if your car doesn’t have a 25 gallon tank (mine has 12..). And Chevrons are more expensive in my area (SF Bay) then the next guy. In the meanwhile, spending the same points on grocery rewards, I never get less than $1.5.
The numbers are a little different on the east coast with Exxon/Mobil. It’s 10c off per gallon per redeemed reward (100 points = 1 reward), so fueling 10 gallons is the equivalent of $1/reward, 15 gallons is $1.5/reward, etc. I also have a small tank, so it’s rarely worth it, but I’ve done it after exhausting all the normal $ off redemptions in the Safeway app.
That’s how the numbers are on the west coast too at Chevron (at least, in my area of California). But Lrdx’s calculations don’t make sense to me either way.
Everybody in this hobby own several 5-gallon gas cans. So …
Sounds like way more trouble than it’s worth.
its some effort, but last year i saved over $700 using the cans and maximizing kroger and safeway’s fuel points
I just started doing this myself. Just bought two 5 gallon cans at Walmart. I guess I need to get one or two more in order to maximize my fuel savings at Kroger Fuel Centers (35 gallons).
Darn, i thought i was the only one.
I own 8×5 gallon cans just to milk Safeway and Kroger’s fuel points
Luckily I earn 10-20 gas rewards a week at Safeway and don’t need to stock up on gas cans to maximize
Nice, hopefully you’re selling lots of those rewards. Can usually get $5-$10/1,000 Safeway points.
I only have an 18 gallon tank, but I went to Walmart and bought two 5-gallon gas cans for ~$15/ea, so now I can effectively fill up to 28 gallons when I use points for $1-off (up to 25 gallons at Safeway, up to 35 gallons at Kroger). I recommend doing this if you have a safe place to store your gas cans and are cool with the extra labor involved.
This may be regional. I don’t see it here on the east coast where Safeway’s gas partner is Exxon/Mobil instead of Chevron/Texaco.
