The Offer

Direct Link to offer (login required.)

Check your Safeway Just4U for a digital coupon to get:

  • $15 off when you buy two $100 Visa gift cards.
  • $10 off when you buy two $50 Visa gift cards

The Safeway deals are usually at Von’s, Albertson’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb, Acme, Shaw’s, and Jewel too.

The Fine Print

  • Valid until 8/3/19

Our Verdict

Remember to save the offer first to your card before use. You won’t get fuel points on Visa/MC gift cards. Make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases. In the past this has not worked on variable load cards.

Is the “Limit 1 per household” enforced/hard coded or is it truly a one-time use offer?

J4U e-coupons are usually limit one use per account (and this one is). You can create another id with a different phone number and do the deal a second time.

Thanks, confirmed 1 per account. It was showing that it was still clipped after my transaction, but about an hour later, the offer went away on J4U.

Sadly didn’t show up on my J4U feed. Just some BS Happy Girl promo.

Usually the variables will work when the offer has specific language similar to “spend $100 or more” which does not seem to be the case today.

American Express’ terms and conditions say that points are not awarded for cash equivalents. Can someone confirm if American Express Gold awards 0x or 4x on Visa gift cards at US supermarkets?
Thank you in advance.

This is not true.

SOME supermarkets, yes. Some no. It all depends 100% on the store.
Go out and test yours, because it’s 100% YMMV and there’s no other way to know.

Yes, I have found stores in my area that do get points, and others that do not.

Just because something works for you, where you live, in a specific store, does not mean it will work for everyone in all stores of that class in other locations.

There’s the additional questions about Amex clawbacks and Level 3 data. If a store is reporting L3 data, you can bet they will deny any bonus points, maybe plain old 1x points. This is absolutely YMMV.

Someone posted on DOC recently that claimed Safeway can send L3 Data to Amex, Kroger no. I don’t know how they would know for sure, but that’s the claim anyway.

I’ve never had a problem with Amex, but my Amex card doesn’t exclude gift cards from rewards, last time I checked.

Last month I purchased variable ($500) gift card using my Amex gold at ACME and I received 4X points. Hope this helps.

Their terms specifically state that gift card purchases, in addition to cash equivalents and reloading of prepaid cards, etc., are excluded from earning MR. So claw backs are justifiable by them later if you get the points at first.

Please let us know if works on variable.

If not I will pass. Pain in the ass to liquidate the low denomination cards

I’m assuming it won’t since it specifically says two $100 cards and they have the $10 off 2 $50 promo too.

I’ve seen a small number of people have similar complaints about these kind of deals and it baffles me why. After a (minimum) of 3% cashback, even if you just buy the two $100 GCs, it”s still a 5% discount (a 2-3% bonus with opportunity cost factored in). You can pay your bills with these if you don’t feel like liquidating them (a visit to Walmart isn’t worth it anyway). No brainer deal for me

While I agree it’s simple to use them for organic spend, it’s only worth it if you have a 4-6% cash back credit card. If you buy 2 $100 cards and get $15 off, it’s $3.10, so a 1.55% gain.

qmc

You net $3.10 on $200 after activation fees. An extra 1.5% over whatever on your organic spending. If you have a high grocery multiplier (and otherwise don’t max it out), this allows you to effectively have that multiplier elsewhere.

The complainers are likely those that MS tons.

Also useful for meeting MSR on certain cards, especially if added to multiple J4U accounts.
