  • Safeway is offering discounts on a number of happy gift cards:
    • $7.50 off $50+ on some Happy cards
    • $15 off $150+ on other Happy cards (e.g Happy guy)
  • You can also get $5 off when you purchase two or more Best Buy gift cards. This one is targeted

The Fine Print

  • $50 minimum purchase
  • Valid until December 19th, 2018 for happy giftcards and December 23rd, 2018 for others

Our Verdict

This is the second time Safeway has had these discounts on Happy gift cards I think. As always make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.

YMMV on how the discount comes off. Just bought a $50 Happy Bride, and $7.50 came off at the register, not as a coupon.

Well that worked out nicely. Bought a $150 Happy Guy card that rang up as $135 (purchased alone, so it is in fact $15 off the card itself and not $15 off groceries, at least at my store), paid with Safeway gift cards from previous Amazon MR deal, earned 5 Safeway rewards (good for $7 off future purchase), used Happy Guy card to buy gift cards at Home Depot. Of course this would have been a much bigger win if my time were worth nothing 🙂

Quick question, did they say anything when you paid with the Happy Guy Card at home depot? And do you use it same way as a prepaid? Swipe, then press Credit, and done?

My Home Depot has a self checkout, so I didn’t have to interact with any employees. Yes, you use it the same as a prepaid where you swipe and select “credit.”

I had an offer for 10x reward for $100 Netflix gift card that I just used. The reward can be redeemed for $20 off $20 for groceries so ends up being 20% off Netflix.

Tempting offer. I used up my grocery category for the year already. I also got $160 in GCs ($120 Netflix + $40 Walgreens) for $120, so 25% off from another (expired) deal.

Happy Guy and Happy Teen are full price. Safeway’s paltry 10% savings remains the better deal.

The Happy cards are a discount off other groceries in your cart, not the cards themselves.

Discount is on groceries, not the happy cards.

Wish they just do a flat % discount. I would buy $500 happy cards all day.

Pretty “meh” offer as they’re ratcheting down the discounts. It strikes me as odd that the Happy folks seem to realize some of their gift cards are better than others! I doubt they appreciate that some of the cards have better MS potential than others. Perhaps the cards that have the most MS potential are SELLING the best, so the powers-that-be think they don’t need to discount them as much!

These cards can be a real PITA if used the way they want them used, by using them at the various merchants, because it’s so hard to drain them all the way down. I like being able to buy these at a discount and then turn around and do an exact purchase of a store gift card that offers a bonus. Like using a Happy Bites for a Panera gift card with their current $10 bonus. So $42.50 for $60 in Panera. It’s perfect to buy the 5 x $10 gift pack to gives as gifts and keep the bonus $10 for me.
