Our Verdict
We see this deal semi-regularly. Make sure to add the offers ASAP as you can’t always save them up until the deadline. You don’t earn fuel points on Mastercard gift card purchases. Use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.
Hat tip to reader ithrowpoop
I went to Safeway yesterday to buy a Chipotle gift card at self-check out and it did not allow me to purchase. I was taken over to customer service desk in the back and the woman told me that ONLY CASH could be used to purchase gift cards. Is that actually a thing, or was that woman lying? In DC if it makes a difference
DuckDonuts Highly YMMV. Try another Safeway store, or even another shift at the same store. It’s certainly not company-wide policy, but some stores make up their own rules.
Chuck The same two deals ($10/$15 off) are available now with VGCs as well (11/7 expiration for Shaw’s). They’re really pushing the GC deals now. MC/VGC $50s & $100s simultaneously, few more days left of 10x on Kohl’s & Dominos, and recently started 10x on PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, & GameStop.
I am in Northern California. I went to local Safeway today and tried to use the two $100 VGC to buy 2 $100 MGC today, and the cashier told me both cards got declined. I instead had to use another card to pay to complete the transaction.
I remembered in the past I was able to pay the balance in safeway by using multiple GCs when individual GC amount is below the total amount, the system would just deduct the amount from the GCs one by one. Is this changed? Please share your experience. Thnks.
Similar experience today. VGC did not auto-drain as it has always done in the past at Safeway. The workaround for declined message was to have cashier select Partial Payment and enter exact amount.
Superman Yu Yes, also had the same experience today. It looks like there has been a POS upgrade, The MCGCs now default to debit, and do not auto-drain. Store gift cards still auto-drain, though. Thank you for the workaround, Superman — I did not think about that on the spot because I was panicking that my card had been drained.
So am I the only slow one that did not know I could use safeway gift cards for the mastercards in this offer? Went yesterday and had a $100 safeway gift card $200 in mastercards and about $8 in grocery’s. It took the full $100 off for the gift card. AARP has $100 safeway e cards for $88, not sure if the e cards will work the same way but I will give it a try with the $50 mastercards.
Greg Paper cards work in theory (the system is not hard coded), but it is unlikely that most cashiers would let you use a paper card to buy gift cards. However, there is a simple workaround. If you have a Safeway gas station nearby, go there, prepay $100 using your paper gift card, pump a little gas, and get change as a plastic gift card (or, sometimes, cash).
What cards currently give enough points on Grocery to be worth the effort? My United was giving 5x, but that seems to have expired.
if u have CSR & some UR pts for PYB redemption
$100 GCs are painful to redeem. Bring back the variables ACME.
Only works on the fixed 100 right? Wish it worked on the variable 500s.
no variables on this one. The verbiage on the variable coupon is 10 off 100+, and is far more rare. I do the bulk of my safeway purchases during that promo
“Hat tip to reader ithrowpoop” hahah too good
YAY!
lol, just finished the staples’ visa deal yday, now it’s MC’s ; next wk, could likely by OD’s visa or mc offer…
Lol, OD deal is also now / this wk… don’t have to wait til next wk
You don’t *usually* earn fuel/reward points so don’t expect them. But I take advantage of this offer (or the VISA) almost every time. And there are occasional instances when these points have been awarded. I have no idea why, or whether it was a store or chain issue. And when it’s the “$100 or more” offer and I’ve bought a variable card I’ve definitely never received them.
