Deal has ended, view more Safeway deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Direct link to offers are below

The Safeway deals are usually at Von’s, Albertson’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb, Acme, Shaw’s, and Jewel too.

The Fine Print

  • Expires February 23, 2021
  • Limit 1 per household per digital coupon

Our Verdict

Can currently get 10% back via Chase offers as well. Save this offer before the end date as they are always pulled early. These don’t usually earn fuel points either. Use a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases if you’re not using the Chase offer.

How to add the offer to my account? I don’t see Clip Coupon button.

Too late to add, usually should add the coupon one week before it ends, as they are always pulled early as Doc says.

Used both offers and moved the 2x$100 over to serve at FD without a problem.

Then went to a different FD and the 2x$50 cards wouldn’t load–system said they were credit cards. Had already personalized the PIN numbers.

I haven’t tried them back at the first FD location, so maybe it was just something at that location, but I’ve never run into this before.I did notice that one of the two $50 cards was packaged slightly differently. The card was oriented 90* differently, and the fine print on one of the cards is slightly different. It’s possible that when I got flustered I actually tried the same card twice and the other would’ve worked fine.

Just wondering if anyone else has had trouble cashing these out? I have the offer loaded on two other Safeway accounts but am a little leery of buying them if I’ll have trouble liquidating.

Incidentally, I do this somewhat casually and am not as experienced in the MS game as many of you here.

Stoked to stack this with the Wells Fargo 10% targeted offer at grocery stores. Will probably grab a variable Amazon card for $103.20 or thereabouts to max out the deal.

Would WF claw back like AmEx did for gift card purchases?

Has anyone encountered an issue where the cashier doesn’t allow gift card transactions to be paid with a credit card? It was never a problem for me until last week. I was about to make payment and the cashier said, “No, you can’t pay for a Visa gift card using a credit card.” I was like, “I have always done it this way ONLY.” I cancelled the transaction and walked off. FYI at Safeway.

B.S. I was just there this morning and used my Discover Card. I have purchased dozens of these gift cards at Safeway (Visa, MC, and their own) over the years and never once heard that. It is true that their Western Union Money Orders can only be paid with Cash or Check. I would have asked them to just run the transaction (the register would deny if that was true) or ask for a cashier supervisor.

I’ve heard some stores do have restrictions. It is BS. But it’s usually also cashier specific in whether it’s enforced. I have actually paid for a Visa GC with a Visa GC. If there’s no sign saying you can’t buy with a credit card I would have them call a manager.

Certain stores and certain cashiers in my area have restrictions.
The two Safeways in my area limits gift cards to $1500 per day but some cashiers will only do one gift card up to $500 per day.

Yep. If an individual store has ever had problems with fraud, that’s what they can wind up doing at that location.

A Safeway store near me now takes only cash for all gift card purchases, because they got ripped off for some $500 VGC transactions. It’s been that way for a couple of years, though they still accept debit cards to buy money orders.

I always use self-checkout. The cashier has to come over to activate the card, but then I just finish ringing up my groceries and pay without him/her standing over my shoulder 🙂

Definitely store dependent and a policy choice (not hard coded into the register). My local Safeway is pretty anal about requiring showing an ID and having the physical card for payment. Drives me crazy they won’t allow me to use Apple Pay which is inherently more secure than a physical card transaction, but whatevs.

Was she upper-middle aged brunette, heavy set? Express lane? I got stuck with her once. She has a real attitude. She did that to me once even though I’ve always used credit cards for gift card purchases there.
So what I do at Von’s — now is if they ask me that I say, “APPLE PAY.”
It works flawlessly and they usually don’t know how to respond to that answer, and I’ve never had an issue.

Problem solved.

Hey folks, thanks for your feedback. I went to the same Safeway, but used self-checkout instead. Happy to report that it worked!

What state is this in? Because most Safeways, for instance in NorCal, require an override at SCO, and you’re more likely to have them tell you to pound sand and go to to the back of a line to get the GC than let you finish the transaction at SCO.

WA.
Yes, you need someone to help at SCO, so the trick is to start tapping gift cards first, and then other items, which by then, the assistant would have walked away. Then pay with CC.

I am a cashier at an Albertsons and my store **usually** allows gift card purchases by credit card. The only reasons why some cashiers are told to refuse a CC purchase of a GC is because of potential fraud and because of the high interchange rates on credit card purchases.

Another reason is because there is actually a dollar limit of gift cards that can be scanned. The dollar limit is between $1.5k – 2k depending on the GC. If it is exceeded, then we get a message on our screen saying “Risk Level 1 Exceeded.” The manager will come over to override it. Then, the transaction is immediately flagged and sent to our fraud department, which will call the store within 1-2 minutes after the receipt prints.

I would try going to another lane or coming back to the store at a different time. Most cashiers don’t mind as long as you don’t hand them a mountain of cards and say “$500 on each.” That will definitely make them leery. Good luck!

Other current GC deals include 10x rewards on $25+ of Domino’s (exp. 2/16), 8x rewards on $50+ of Apple (exp. 2/16), and $5 off when you buy 2 Ulta, Outback, Fanatics, or Happy (exp. 2/14). The Ulta variable GCs started at $15 (rather than $25), so a 16.67% discount is decent for that brand combined with 2x rewards and CC grocery points.

Here in the northeast, most sales run Sun-Sat. I think Save-A-Lot is the only one that does otherwise.

Just completed this at my local Tom Thumb. Both offers were done in a single transaction. I used the variable $20-$500 variable gift cards for this as these were the only Visa Gift Cards available. The main register sent me to customer service window to complete as the total amount would exceed $300 and she didn’t have an override card. Be aware that there is a $5.95 transaction fee per card ($23.80 in fees). Total after digital coupons applied is $298.80. I either entered my rewards number incorrectly (possible as I don’t shop Tom Thumb regularly) or the digital coupons hadn’t gone through and updated to my account. I had to show both offers to the cashier and she entered in the discounts manually.

It didn’t come off because they’re supposed to be the fixed 50 and 100 cards. You got lucky they overrode it. Done correctly, the fees should been 21.80 (5.95 for 100s and 4.95 for 50s) Good on you to get the discount regardless.
