The Offer
Safeway has a Father’s Day gift card deal starting tomorrow June 8 and running through June 21:
- Get an instant $10 discount off your $50 purchase of the following gift card brands: Lowe’s, XBOX, Applebee’s, AutoZone, Brinker, Fandango, Golfsmith, Jiffy Lube, L.L.Bean, Petco
There doesn’t appear to be any limit, but you need to do separate transactions with each $50 of gift cards ($100 in one transaction will get just $10 off, not $20).
Slickdeals is reporting that this deal will be valid at Albertsons and Vons too. (It’s supposed to be in the Albertson’s circular on page 3, but I can’t seem to find it there.)
Also be sure to check out your local store’s circular to ensure that you have this offer running as some locations might have a slightly different offer of $10 discount on the next shopping trip, and not an instant $10 discount.

Our Verdict
Pretty good deal here, especially the Lowe’s deal since their gift cards don’t usually go on 20% discount. Could even be a small resale play on the Lowe’s deal, mainly to rack up some free credit card points.
Remember that the Freedom card earns 5x on groceries until the end of the month. Note that some stores might not allow the purchase of gift cards with a credit card or they may have limits.

Can anyone confirm that this deal is also at Randall’s Supermarkets(owned by Safeway)?
I couldn’t find the deal in their weekly ads.
Same $200 or 4 GC limit at my Safeway as of last week (or earlier) for credit. Its per transaction but of course increases your chance of getting a decline/phone call etc if you go over. Also $200 requires approval now. Pain.
Can confirm that only one $50 Lowe’s GC got the discount on a single order. Didn’t try multiple transactions…
Multiple transactions with one Safeway Club Card worked fine. Of course YMMV with staff.
My local circular for tomorrow does have the instant $10 savings. This would be a terrific deal — if it were good at a store where you could buy other gift cards! Otherwise, it depends on your own spending habits. I’m sure I’d use up $50 at Lowes in the next year, but it’s not exciting enough to make a special trip to Safeway for. I’d feel differently if I were about to undertake a big home improvement project.
It may vary based on location I guess. I found mine on Weekly Ads 6/8-6/14 but the deal effective is 6/8 to 6/21.
There is a notice in my store in WA that there will be a cap of 4 cards/$200 per day per person limit for credit purchase of any gift cards and 20 cards/$1999.99 for debit or cash. Apply to Albertsons, Safeway and Vons. We don’t have Vons here so I don’t know about that but Albertsons here don’t really need a club card to purchase discount gift cards I think. So maybe multiple transactions will work. But Safeway always require club card for those gift card deals and there is no way to avoid that I think.
