Our Verdict

Update: Seems variable Visas are not working. 5 back variables are working (up to $200) as are variable Mastercard.

These often work on variable load gift cards (e.g $500) as well (share your datapoints in the comments below) making them a lot more useful when using a card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases.

I have an incomplete dp that may be a developing story. I just went to safeway in arizona and tried to buy 2 $500 visa giftcards. The cashier who has helped me do the same thing a thousand times before said she didn’t think the system would accept a credit card as payment and that the rules changed today. She said she would be happy to try if I wanted but that she said management told her it wouldn’t work. She tried and it didnt work. My card was charged $11.90 (just the activation fees) instead of $1011.90 and her screen told her to ask for the remaining $1000 in cash or debit with a pin. She also said she thought all giftcards (not just visa) would be cash or debit moving forward starting today. Hope she’s wrong but the register seemed to agree with her. Maybe theres a dollar limit or something maybe its just visa/mc ext who knows…

What CC did you attempt to pay with? Asking because it’s possible that they’ve coded against credit, but it’s possible that other CCs (Visa/MC) can masquerade as debit cards.

A somewhat related DP: Safeway spending in FL contributed nothing toward the MC Grocery Promo with Shell FuelRewards. The store did appear on their “participation” map.

The black package variable load MetaBank Visa (the newer package with the UPC code on the back) worked for me at Safeway in MD today, $10 off $500 load. (It rings up as “BHN VISA KEVLAR VA.”

Black box variable Visa GC still NOT working at Acme. Sad! But at least this store manager just gave me the 10 bucks.

The variable Mastercard did work for me the other day though, so hopefully that one is still good. I prefer the Visas for the same reasons everyone else does, but I’ll happily buy the MCs to save the mega-hassle. Not sure what’s gone wrong, and usually when one subsidiary fixes the problem, it fixes everywhere.

I’m confused with the rewards system. I just looked at mine since you commented about this. I have 5 in my gas rewards. Is that 5 10 cent discounts or 5 points? Thier website wasn’t very helpful.

I should specify. I bought a $500 MasterCard so I can’t really tell if I got 5 points for the fee or 500 points for the whole thing.

5 x 10c rewards. ACME has the worst system for points displaying. Even their receipt doesn’t say what is the balance points after every purchase. It only says the current earned.

Thanks to both of you for responding. I actually looked at the receipt after the website was no help. I did indeed receive 5×10 cent rewards. NBG, +1 on worst system for displaying points.
