Our Verdict
The Rakuten portal is offering 16x at Saks and explicitly stacks with this promo. If you’re new to Rakuten, you can find our referral link here. See other portal options here.
Personally I’ll give this a miss, even with $50 coming back from Amex (remember to register first) and 15x from Rakuten, but some people will find it worthwhile, especially if you find the Rakuten points valuable.
The deal can make more sense if you have two/three Amex cards and do this deal in a Saks store. Remember again that the $75 gift card does expire.
Did anyone miss the expiration date of 12/18/22? Seems like a deceptive business practice to me to issue a GC with a 1 week expiration.
Saks has some funky items for sale online – they sell steak and other gourmet food items from Allen Brothers or Chicago Steak Company if you need to find a use for the $75 promo if you don’t want more clothes.
RAKUTEN is 10% at Saks today 12.12.2022 ‐at least it is in the App.
I’ll add that
Perfect time to Upgrade a Gold to Plat (if you have gotten the Plat SUB previously). You can triple dip/quad dip the Saks credit. (Can use Gold card # till new card is delivered and still get credits).
Might be able to Triple-dip never done an upgrade in December – but definitely worth it for the Double-dip and upgrade bonus (YMMV) We downgraded this card to Gold from Platinum December 2021.
Just chatted with Amex about and upgrade bonus and they sent me a link 25K MR/$2K
But easily worth the AF with the Double dip.
Plus loosing PP experiences on the C1 VenX the Centurion Lounge access for both P1/P2 is now become more important benefit.
Done and done.
Used my $75 BF promo GC plus $50 Saks from newly upgraded Platinum (from downgrade Gold) –
10# of Waygu Beef Sliders from Allen Brothers and a Ballarini 3-Piece Crepe Pan set so after Rakuten 10% stack Net cost of $51
To earn $75 BF promo GC I used $100 Saks GC from visit to Saks B&M Union SQ SFO (2 personal Plats) plus Rakuten 16% Stack (Also bought Waygu Sliders and kitchen knives (I cook a lot and we also have a house overseas that we are furnishing – so perfect items that are easy to transport in Checked bags).
Part of my original $150 order never shipped so I’m still waiting on the gift card. Can’t wait to see it ship December 19th!
Rakuten is back down to 10x. Does anyone know if typically the rates increase again on Cyber Monday?
if you look up Saks on cashbackmonitor it has a View Best Rate history (hyper link just under the store name at top) going back ~16 months.
Finally I feel this worked out this year, since p1 and p2 were able to buy $50 Gift Cards during the first 6 months of the year.
The plan (part 1 already execute)
Step 1:
Buy $150 worth of stuff using 2*$50 GC + $50 charge (with credit) against P1 platinum. Out of pocket is only the taxes (~$16). Get 15x MR points back on $165 charge through Rakuten.
Step 2:
Buy $125 (incl. taxes) worth of stuff using $75 Promotional GC + $50 charge (with credit) against P2 platinum. Get ?x MR points back on $125 charge through Rakuten.
And for once we actually found some stuff that was useful (Travel French Press and a few other kitchen gadgets)
Where and how did you buy their giftcards from? Deals on these cards?
Mat
You have to Visit a B&M physical store (not the off Fifth stores). You can use multiple cards and get a single GC (you can also combine GC at a later date at a B&M – easier to add to an existing GC tho).
You generally don’t get rakuten cash back on any amount you use GC to pay for at a retailer for just FYI.
Full amount has always tracked for me, done ever 6 months for the last 3 years
Bought a fancy toaster oven, which was at the same Black Friday price just about everywhere (Best Buy, Crate & Barrel, Bed, Bath & Beyond, etc). It has more functions than I need, but I’ve accumulated a bunch of physical gift cards the past few years. I’m happy to have used up most of the credits.
I bought a Nespresso VertuoDeluxe ($139) plus a pair of socks $12. Already used Amex credit, but with Rakuten and $75 “fun” credit for a gift, it’s a good deal. Ps, the Nespresso machine is great!!
Tried several things and promo code didn’t work. Otherwise would have done it.
