Santander recently took over Sovereign bank in an attempt to increase their North American operations. They are currently the fourth largest bank in the world by profits. To try and gain market share they’ve introduced a promotion where you can earn up to $20 per month by opening an extra20 checking and extra20 savings account with them.

The Offer
- Receive $10 a month when you receive direct deposits totaling $1,500 or more per month
- Receive $10 a month when you pay two bills per month through the BillPay tab in online banking. You must receive the direct deposit bonus to be eligible for this bonus
Santander will send a 1099-INT form which will label these bonuses as interest, as such you must pay interest on these bonuses.
The Fine Print
- You must have a extra20 checking ($25 minimum opening balance) and extra20 savings account ($10 minimum opening balance). Extra20 savings will be opened automatically when you open the extra20 checking account
- $10 monthly fee if you don’t have direct deposits totalling $1,500 or more per month. Fee is not charged for the first two months (1)
- Limit of 1 extra20 package per person (e.g one extra20 checking and one extra20 savings account)
- Bonuses are added to the extra20 savings account on the first business day after your extra20 checking account service period ends.
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Account Fee $10
Santander charges a monthly account service fee of $10. This is waived if you have a direct deposit of $1,500 or more. The account fee is also waived automatically for the first two months.
Early Account Termination Fee
There is an early account termination fee of $25 if you close it within the first 90 days of account opening. You’d want to keep the account open anyway to continue to get the bonus.
The Verdict
It’s definitely worth signing up for this offer, it may take a little bit of fiddling around to get everything working but once you’ve done so it should be relatively hands free. The easiest way to do everything is to set up an automatic ACH transfer each month that will transfer $1,500 into your account, then set up two Bill Pays (these can just be partial Bill Pays – e.g for your electricity or gas or credit card). You’ll also want another ACH pull that will get the money back out of the account.
There is no end date on this offer, so as long as it sticks around for at least a year you’ll be making more than the other bank sign up bonuses currently out there. Update: I originally signed up for this account back in January of 2014 and have received the bonus every month since then. This is currently my favorite bank bonus, you can see a list of all my recommended bonuses here and a full list of bonuses here.

Can this be combined with current $150 promo – https://www.santanderbank.com/us/pages/personal/checking-accounts ?
No
Discover ACH worked for me to trigger the bonus this month.
I did get hit with a $3.50 fee on the savings account though. Need to figure out why, and how to get rid of it.
Hi, Thanks for the detail write-up. I’m comparing this to the other 5k 5% APR options. Am I correct that this Extra20 account do not require money to be tied up inside the account, unlike the Netspend option.
Here’s the plan, please correct me if I am wrong:
1. ACH $1500 as Direct Deposit : $1500
2. Bill Pay #1 : $1499
3. Bill Pay #2 : $1498
4. ACH Pull remaining $$ : $0
Repeat monthly.
Husband and I are looking into an account. Actually 2 accounts, one for each of us. We would split his work direct deposits into both accounts and bill pays evenly as well. Would this work? I noticed its one account per person, how about households? This would be an easy $480 for us unless they decline one of us for this very reason?
AFAIK it’s one per person and your idea would work, but I didn’t look into this.
Have you and your husband tried this yet? I had the same idea, but haven’t tried it yet. Hopefully it works!
I received error Message saying the bank is not able to verify the identity…. what could be the reason
Any reason you say ACH pull to get money back out? Is there a reason I shouldn’t use a push from Santander? I don’t see any ACH fees on the deposit schedule…
After setting my Discover It’s cash advance limit to $0, I tried to fund a new account with $500. The following error message prevented me from proceeding: “There was an error verifying your payment information. Please check the information you have entered and try again.” I called Discover (super helpful and quick customer service) and they confirmed that the last transaction was denied due to the cash advance limit. So, it seems that Discover is no longer a free funding option at Santander.
I ended up funding the full $500 on my Chase Freedom, which worked just fine, even though my cash advance limit is set to their required minimum of $20.
What is considered a “bill”? If I pay down principal on my HELOC, does that count even though there is no actual bill associated with that payment? Also, if I make two payments in the service period to that same HELOC, does that count as 2 bills or does I need to set up payment to a different company as well?
If it can be paid with bill pay then it counts.
Can the bill pays be nominal amounts? Like two cents?
Thanks DoC!
No minimum specified or enforced, but why risk it? Just make it a few dollars at least so it looks somewhat legitimate.
I’ve done $10. Just starting to try $5 now. Hopefully, I’ll remember to let you know if it works.
$2 works.
