Should I Sign Up For The American Express Business Platinum Card Before Annual Fee Is Increased To $595? (9:59pm EST End Time)

Update: Looks like Dan got the date wrong.

Update: According to Dans Deals the annual fee will be increasing to $595 9:59pm EST 1/30/19. Only a couple of hours remain. It isn’t clear if this will affect all links or only affiliate links.

In case you didn’t know American Express is increasing the annual fee to $595 on the Business Platinum card at the start of February, this is an increase of $145 annually. American Express is adding the following benefits:

  • One year of complimentary Platinum Global Access from WeWork ($2,700 value), a network of premium workspaces around the world. With Platinum Global Access, enjoy over 300 workspaces in 75+ cities and 20+ countries.
  • Up to $200 in statement credits annually for U.S. purchases with Dell on your Business Platinum Card.

I believe the Dell credit will be a $100 semi annual credit, working similar to the Saks Benefit rather than the monthly Uber benefit offered on the personal version but that is yet to be confirmed.

Some readers want to know if they should sign up before the annual fee is increased, or wait until afterwards. The current bonuses available are as follows:

When other cards have been refreshed like this, we have seen the public sign up bonus fall after the product refresh. If that holds true then applying now would make sense as you’d be getting a better bonus and saving $145 in the first year. I think if you can get the 100,000 point offer after $10,000 then applying now is a no brainer, if you can only get the 75,000 point offer then I think it only makes sense if you can self refer and hit the $20,000 in total spend required.

It’s obviously also possible that we see a really strong launch offer from American Express, although that isn’t consistent with what has happened previously. At the end of the day, the choice is yours! Will you be applying or waiting? Let us know in the comments below.

I did an upgrade to the Green Card and now I’m my annual fee is due. I was going to cancel it but they’re going to take my points back because I haven’t kept the card for a full year SINCE receiving the bonus (upgraded in February but awarded the points in June (the whole 5th month bonus offer)). Now I’m stuck with the card at $450.00. I guess I can use the Dell $200 plus I’ll get another $200 airline bonus next January and maybe an upgrade in points if I spend XX by then.

The rule that you have to keep the card for 12 months + 1 day in case of a new account AND/OR upgrades was there for quite a while. The approach which one should take – do not upgrade if keeping the card for a year + does not make financial sense (all bonuses considered).

Although I still think that you can downgrade back to Green 12 months + 1 day after your upgrade (or to be safe after the day you got your bonus)… and get your AF prorated (see this #3: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/15-things-everybody-should-know-about-american-express/)
So effectively you would pay only 1 year worth of the AF for your upgrade at the end of the day.

If they attempt to charge you $595 vs $450 you may have a good case for asking for a credit or some courtesy MR points, as you did not have a chance to pay a full fee at the original price, just keep in mind that those MR points will be 1099ed (if you go over $600 in all “free” & referral points in the year).

All in all, I think you are ok… good luck.

Well this just happen, thought it was going to be all $200

“Get up to $100 in statement credits between January and June and up to $100 in statement credits between July and December for U.S. purchases directly with Dell on your Business Platinum Card. That’s up to $200 in statement credits annually. Enrollment required.”

I got that on the website

So all this number does it connect me with a CSR to leave a voicemail. Is that right?

Hopefully I will get a call back before end of the day.

Good news.

Here is the info from my Amex contact (sorry can not share his info online)

Looks like the current members with the lower AF will still get all new benefits. And you can apply for the old fee till the end of the day today (not sure if EST or PST).

“Yes. The additional benefits will apply to the current Business Platinum Card members. You have to enroll through your online account (available 02/01) to receive the statement credits for purchases through Dell. Regarding WeWorks, members will receive 1 complementary year of access from the day they enroll through WeWorks website, but they need to enroll by 12/31/2019”

P.S. Keep in mind that what you are loosing is a triple dip on airline $200 and Dell $200 compared to the application done in December 2019, but no guarantee you get 100K offer at the later time.

So what will happen to those of us who got the card in december? Will be be automatically enrolled in the new benifets or will we keep our old benifets until the new AF is billed?

Approved for the 100K for 10K spend and $450 AF via phone call. Phone call took about 15 minutes while the CSR read me the terms of the card and took my business info. Approved in under 30 seconds once the information was submitted without a hard pull. No mention of the benefits changing next month or the higher annual fee, nor did I inquire about it. I used an Amex number listed over a reddit a couple weeks ago.

Data point: just called in & got the 100K offer however the rep stated that the new benefits would not be available on the lower fee card & would only be available next year when the fee increased for me. (She did hedge the statement with ‘I believe’).

Note I didn’t mention anything about a mailer, just said I had been considering the Amex business & saw the fee was increasing & was seeing if there were any offers on my account.

Since I can’t edit my comment, see the below reply as that number is incorrect.

There is no option to talk with a CSR. Did I do something wrong? There was just an option if you want to remove your phone number from the marketing list!

Oh crap, sorry, that was the number they called me back from (must be a generic one for the caller ID – when I called, it went to voicemail but received a call back); the actual number I called was 844-513-6975
