The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Apply for the Venmo credit card by July 31st and get double rewards through December 31st.

You’ll end up getting 6% on your top category, 4% on your second top category, and 2% everywhere else.

Card Details

  • No annual fee
  • No sign up bonus
  • Card typically earns at the following rates:
    • 3% cash back on your Top Spend category
    • 2% cash back on your Second Top Spend category
    • 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • The following categories are eligible for ‘Top Spend’: Dining & Nightlife, Travel, Bills & Utilities, Health & Beauty, Grocery, Gas, Transportation, Entertainment

Our Verdict

Lots of people are seeing this offer – not sure if it’s showing for everyone in the Venmo app or it’s targeted to select users via email. The 2% everywhere isn’t very exciting, but 6% and 4% could be interesting, e.g. if you spend a lot on restaurants or grocery stores you can get 6% on that top category with no limit for almost 7 months with no apparent limit.

As noted in the card details, only the following categories are eligible to get the Top Category rate: Dining & Nightlife, Travel, Bills & Utilities, Health & Beauty, Grocery, Gas, Transportation, Entertainment.

Had this offer last year. I used it at BJs. Use tap or it will count as other which will give you 1%. I end up getting $25 from Venmo after complaining to state agency.

Can you explain more? You complained to your state agency that you only got 1% for the swipe charges? Or what? (I’m assuming you buy gift cards at BJ’s?)

How sensitive is Synchrony bank with gc purchases?

I accidentally accepted the card. I was just checking to see what limit they would give me. Must have clicked “next” one too many times. Next thing I know, Credit Karma is sending me an alert for a hard pull on Trans Union (phew, not Experian). 🤦

Eh. Well, this card is not that great for me at the moment as I have Citi Custom Cash as for 5% dining, AmEx Blue Cash Preferred for 6% groceries, and US Bank Cash+ for 5% for both utilities and ground transportation.

Not a lot of value left in the remaining categories. We don’t have a car so, no need for gas. That leaves Travel, Health & Beauty, and Entertainment. Meh. Sure wish medical bills counted as “health”.

Yeah, it’s lame. From the terms:

Health & Beauty: Drug stores and pharmacies that sell prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and may also sell related items such as cosmetics and toiletries, and cosmetic stores that sell beauty products. This category also includes sports and recreation facilities that require membership such as health clubs, tennis, golf and swimming clubs.

As a test, I used my new Venmo card to pay a small medical co-pay bill. Coded as “other.” Bummer, but now we know for sure.

When you “accidentally accepted the card,” was the double rewards scenario (6%, 4%, and 2%) clearly presented to you. All I see on the Venmo app is the 3%, 2% and 1% offer and I don’t want to apply for the card and then later find out that the double reward promotion was not attached to my new card. Anything you can share would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, I was targeted for the double rewards deal. I think I got an email with the subject: “Apply for this card with no impact to your credit bureau score if declined.”

“You’re invited to apply for the Venmo Credit Card — no impact to your credit bureau score, if declined.¹ For your first six months, enjoy 6% cash back on your eligible top spend category, 4% on the next, and 2% on the rest of your purchases,² customized to how you spend each month.

Extra bonus? Keep earning up to 3% cash back even after the bonus period ends.³”

The 10,000 limit should be removed from the page as they lifted this last year?  William Charles

I would assume/hope so, but has anyone received confirmation that medical bills qualify under “Health & Beauty”? The icon of a woman getting her hair styled doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in that.

Just drug stores and gym memberships. Lame. Though I guess there’s some MS to be done for people not in wastelands like me. :/
