Just wanted to let everybody quickly know about a small change that we’ve made to the comments. Previously on the left there was a giant space where a users gravatar would show if they have one (I’d recommend setting up one up if you don’t already). This created a lot of dead space, so we’ve moved this slightly to remove that dead space. In addition there was a comment number that was a permalink and a date/time the comment was left. We’ve removed the comment number as it didn’t serve much purpose, you can find the permalink for the comment by clicking on the date. User profiles (i icon) have also been moved slightly.
I think the new layout is a lot better, but as always we welcome your feedback. A big thanks also goes to Matt from 336 creative for making these changes possible. Hopefully we will be working with Matt on making other improvements to the site in the future.
testing
Whoops, edited
let’s see if this worked…
should have worked
William Charles DoC, While I am here testing this Brave browser you promoted…
I thought I would remind you of the Chrome mobile browser issue I e-mailed you about. Not all the user comments show up on long pages when you scroll down while on mobile android phones when using Chrome. I think it’s something that should be fixed, and if that’s not feasible at this time, at least well advertised as not working quite right for the followers. Like it or not, Chrome is the most widely used browser so would stand to reason affecting a broad audience.
Thanks, can you resend the e-mail? I missed some
Absolutely! It’s probably a WordPress issue, but I hoping it can be fixed as I don’t recall this as an issue before the latest DoC upgrade.
testing
Test sat.
I wasn’t sure where the best place to post this was, but I figured this was the most recent comments-related thread, so I thought I’d ask here. Is there a way for me to see all my comments and replies in one area? I remember posting something and was curious about a reply, but I’m having trouble finding the original DoC post and my comments in it. EDIT: I figured it out. Click the “i” next to a user’s name, then click the activity tab, then you can go through all prior comments. Cheers!
Yup, that’s a new feature of the new comment system. It’s also useful for seeing other people’s history to know how much weight to give their comments, etc.
Love the new commenting feature! I have found it very useful for just that reason. I was using a referral thread and i chose someone who had a lot of useful comment history.
Glad to see people using this!
Like the new system
Comments section still doesn’t look pleasing and not easy to read. The avatar takes unnecessary space and not needed. Anyone can pick any avatar and what is the use of it? Also the grey box for replies is not good. The comments don’t span across the width of the page. Bottom line, it is not easy to read and scroll.
Keeping it simple always go farther. The priority should be how to maximize real estate and is it easy and pleasing to read. Who cares about avatar, as anyone can choose any handle and avatar and we are NOT trying to identify a person through this any way. Handle name tells you that.
I disagree that avatars aren’t useful, they are extremely useful to me as I can quickly identify regular readers. Not sure what you mean in regards to the comment width
LOL, look at the above few avatars and you tell me how many different kind of animated faces you can remember. Furthermore, it will be easier to remember regular posters by their handle also. Avatars are not helpful unless someone were to post their picture clearly, which many are not going to do. Again, your blog man. I am benefited a lot,so can’t be very critical. You put lot of thinking into writing these posts, summary etc. What I meant by width comment was, the posts wraps around center of the page. instead of using full width. Full width meaning less lines, less scrolling. My whole emphasis is on how to make it easier to read and eye pleasing. nothing else matters to me.
I don’t remember every single avatar, but I recognize a lot of the regular readers avatars. In this post I remember most of the avatars for example. I find it a lot easier to remember pictures than names and some people just use their first name so it can get confusing.
Moving to full width blog posts is somebody we will address in the new redesign! It’s something I hate as well.
Could you please tone down the ads? Way too many ads especially on the mobile site.
We’re testing auto ads at the moment via Adsense, takes a few days/weeks for them to get tuned in properly.
Hi Doc, today I’m noticing a lot of ads in the middle of people’s comments. For example someone has a 4 paragraph comment and there’s an ad after the first paragraph. Is this new? Can this be changed so that the ads appear in between comments and not in the middle of comments? It looks like the commenters are advertising stuff! I can send you examples if you don’t know what I’m talking about….
Just posted this above: “We’re testing some dynamic ads at the moment (e.g they are inserted into weird positions) takes a few days of testing to get the ideal positions.
The site is free and we don’t use bank or credit card affiliate links, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have ads on the site.”
I don’t mind the site having ads, it’s just been weird to see them stuck inside someone’s comment. Hopefully it will get better soon (still happening as of right now). Thanks!
Yup, bit annoying on mobile. Hopefully it improves! If not we will remove them
