Southwest Extends Travel Funds Until September 7, 2022

Update: Funds have now been extended until September 7, 2022.

Original post: Southwest has announced that it will be extending the expiry date on travel funds as follows:

  • Customers’ funds that have expired or will expire between March 1-May 31, 2020, will now expire June 30, 2021
  • Any newly created travel fund because of a flight cancellation between March

This will happen automatically, but Southwest is stating it will take their technology team a few weeks to make these changes. Southwest is also letting you change flights for free (including any fare difference).

  • I have vouchers expiring on Dec 31 2020, it would be nice if they extended mine too lol

I wrote a TC off in March so this is happy news. AND, it's already updated! :)

Thanks so much to DOC and how so many interesting topics are covered!

  • Still not seeing the 25k tier qualifying points post. It's been a few weeks...

  • All my travel funds were extended including those going back to May of 2019 and through February of 2020 - $1,500 in all. Tier status and companion pass extended to 6/30/21.

This is why my family is loyal to Southwest. No hassle, And treatment that is more than fair.

  • From their website:
We have also added a new benefit for our valued Rapid Rewards Members. Those Members who have travel funds that are set to expire or funds that are created between March 1, 2020 and September 7, 2020 will have the option to convert those travel funds into Rapid Rewards points at the same rate you would be able to purchase a ticket with points today.

It will be available soon as they announced. Might worth it if you won't use your funds in 2 years or can use them when RR miles are on sale..

  • SW is also offering the option to convert travel funds that are set to expire/created between 03/01 & 09/07 into Rapid Rewards points. Points don’t expire plus you could book flight for anyone with points. Isn’t that a better play here?

    • Not really as you’re given 2 years to use them. Using the travel funds you’ll earn points on that booking along with credit towards Companion Pass and A-List both of which people are getting boosts putting them closer to earning them.

With points you don’t earn on the flights, and through the end of the year points are devalued. They’re devalued because they would normally cover taxes which have been waived currently. Because of this they’re not as valuable until redeeming at least next year.

      • I see your points (pun intended).

Still, I guess the biggest advantage is that you can book flights for anyone. Doesn't have to be the original traveler

  • travel funds which were bound to expire jan2021 are still the same. why are these not taken care of?

    • Use them to book a ticket and cancel it and the new funds will have the extended date.

      • I am in the same situation. I tried this, and it does not appear to work. The funds kept their Jan 2021 expiration.

        • It doesn’t happen instantly happens over 2-3 days after cancelling.

          • Yep, it worked. Thanks. I saw the extension around 24 hours later. Maybe a nightly process.

          • Is it for sure? I have some expiring Oct 2020. I tried asking nice (they were from a Spring Training trip the day they were cancelled), but they wouldn't even extend them a couple months.

          • Yes, using the funds to book another ticket and then cancel it will initially still say the same expiration date. A couple of days later, the expiration date will update to Sept 2022, since the credit was created by cancelling a flight booked in May.

  • Confirmation Success!
Travel fund that expired about 4/05/2020 and disappeared without a trace has come back to life! New expiration is 9/7/2022. Awesome. 2nd travel fund in my account of $5.60 also has same expiration date.

    • Two plus years of extension only goes to show SW being proactive like this means the big WAMY to the American economy is on its way. Set aside some cash people.

  • I have funds was going to expired on December, 2020. Now it is being extend to 9/7/2022 as well.

    • Hmm that’s interesting ... they are only extending funds that are going to expire before Sep 2020. At least that’s the latest update

I have funds expiring on Jan 2nd 2021. They aren’t extended (yet)
