The Offer
The usual sign up bonus on the Spirit airlines card is 15,000 miles after you make your first purchase (if a friend refers you, they’ll also earn 5,000 miles). At the moment it’s possible to get this offer and an additional $100 statement credit when you make $500+ in purchases within the first three months. Here is how to get the offer:
By phone
- Call 1.800.932.2775 and mention priority code VACE5Z
Online
- Create or log into your spirit airlines account
- Search for any flight
- Keep clicking continue until you get to the final booking page, half way down you’ll see a link to the special offer that looks like this (just below the “Total Due” section
Unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s possible to provide a direct link, as it pre-fills in all of your information into the application.
The Fine Print
- Card earns 2x miles on all purchases
- Annual fee of $59 waived first year
- 5,000 anniversary bonus Spirit miles when you spend at least $10,000 in purchases annually and pay your annual fee
- Spirit miles don’t expire as long as you make at least one purchase per month on your Spirit credit card, usually they expire within three months unless you have any earning activity
- I’ve included the award chart below, which can be accessed directly by clicking here. You’ll notice that having the credit card allows you to take flights starting at 2,500 miles + taxes
Fees
Spirit airlines is an ultra low cost carrier airline, which basically means they’ll change you a fee for almost anything you can think of. You can view the optional extras and their associated charges by clicking here. I’ve listed some of the more common/annoying fees below, for prices I’ve assumed that you’re ordering these services during the booking phase (which is when it’s at it’s cheapest). I’ve also listed the prices for after December 31st, 2014 which is when prices go up (by about $1).
- Carry on baggage: $35
- First checked bag: $30
- Customer requested seat assignment:Â $1 to $50 (auto assignment is free)
Extra Free Miles
At the moment it’s also possible to get an additional 8,000 miles for free, simply by complaining about spirit or another airline. You can read more about this offer here. If you know of any other spirit free mile opportunities then please let us know by using the contact us page.
Our Verdict
I’m sure this is going to cause an uproar, but I think I’m going to apply for this card. Let me explain why. This card is issued by Bank of America, in general when you apply for multiple cards from them in the same day they will only pull your credit report once.
I’ve been stocking up on Alaska miles recently and want to continue doing so. If I apply for another Alaska card, I might as well tack this onto it. It’s a $100 cash bonus, I get 15,000 miles and I’ll also be able to utilize miles from other Spirit airlines promotions in the future. I don’t have a problem flying an ultra low cost carrier (it’s certainly not for everybody) if it can save me miles and money.
What makes applying for this card a little less attractive is the fact that Bank of America have shut down the downgrade path to the Better Balance Rewards card which would have netted me an extra $120 per year. I haven’t decided if I’ll take this route or not yet, I want to do a bit more research and try to finalize my travel plans for work before pulling the trigger. Yes, there is a chance that I’ll miss this offer but I never let the threat of a deadline influence making a rational decision. What are your thoughts on this offer? Will you consider it? Have you flown Spirit before? How did you like it?Â
I think this card doesn’t make a lot of sense for the majority of people due to the excessive fees that Spirit charge, but it might make sense for some people and only really when trying to combine multiple credit pulls. For the vast majority of travelers there are better cards out there.

If I cancel the spirit credit card without zeroing my miles, will my miles be taken away? Does anyone know? I have about $34K miles but too scared to fly anywhere because of COVID-19. Any other way to use Spirit miles? Thanks
I got my card about 6 weeks ago and have yet to get the $100 credit. The first time I spoke to the Spirit representative from Baghdad she said that it is a Bank of America credit. After calling Bank of America they said it was a Spirit Airlines Credit. 2 more calls back and forth wound up making a fifth call total and 3rd to Spirit New Delhi where it was finally acknowledged that I was do the $100 credit from them however it takes 4 to 8 weeks to apply to your account. If I don’t get it I’ll be canceling the account.
Question about one of your comments above:
“Spirit miles don’t expire as long as you make at least one purchase per month on your Spirit credit card, usually they expire within three months unless you have any earning activity”
Wouldn’t this be a purchase at least once every 3 months instead of every 1 month? I know it is better to play it safe than sorry, but wouldn’t once every 2 months be sufficient even if you wanted a little cushion?
Is this offer still valid?
Believe so, try a dummy booking and see what happens.
Do you know their policy on offer matching if someone just recently applied and DIDN’T receive this offer?
People have had success getting matched with BofA before, just a matter of trying I guess.
I tried this yesterday but had no success with the mock booking and seeing the offer. I also called the toll-free number listed and tried to apply with that offer code mentioned above and they didn’t see anything in the bonus terms about the $100 credit, just the standard 15,000 points offer. Do you think this deal is now dead?
I’ve had the card for several years and it used to be the only one I really used due to the 2 miles/$ and low reward redemptions (sometimes). Flying Spirit is absolutely fine, I’ve gone to Mexico with my two kids for a month with only a personal item each and had no trouble. An underseat carryon usually meets criteria for a personal item. Obviously it’s a low cost airline but having recently flown both United and American I didn’t see much advantage to paying more. One potential issue is that if you miss your flight (even a connection) Spirit won’t put you on another carrier, and you do need to have activity once every three months to keep your miles.
If you mainly want the statement credit it doesn’t matter, but off peak availability used to be MUCH better and they had occasional awesome promotions, like returning all your miles after a redemption. The time periods are more suited to discretionary travel, but I have two kids and no money and flew many times to Cancun for roughly $80/each. Recently however there is rarely availability for the very low award levels, where there used to be lots. We were even able to go to Cartagena for 10K miles by booking the two legs separately. Nowadays, Cartagena availability is nonexistent. I have over 200K miles and have stopped using my card much because of this.
Still, I don’t understand why Spirit is so hated, when Frontier, with a similar model nowadays, is regularly promoted on these sites. Spirit is certainly in one’s face, but their prices are low, their planes are clean and on time, and they fly places I want to go.
I’m cheap, but I’m not a masochist. Spirit is a terrible, terrible airline. I guess if you’re able to get the card without a separate hard pull it’s no problem, but it’s hard for me to overstate my dislike for that airline.
Jeramiah, what is it that you dislike about Spirit? And what do you like about Spirit?
I personally have never flown with Spirit.
A friend of mine flies on Spirit 5-6 times a year. He does say that Spirit is very frugal and charges for almost everything. But he has never complained about their on time performance. Many times Spirit’s tickets are about half the price of other major airlines.
And most of Spirit’s flights are packed full.
I’m more interested in the $100 statement credit, the miles and other card benefits are just a bonus. I really don’t mind flying spirit, haven’t had many issues with them flying on time.
My wife cancelled this card about 2 months ago
after zeroing out her miles account. Any guess if she
could reapply successfully?
Thanks,
John
BofA is churnable so she should be OK, but as always YMMV. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/list-of-churnable-credit-cards/#Bank_of_America
I am really tempted to pull the trigger on this offer, but I have already reached my CC App limit for this time period. Hopefully this offer will be around next year. Do you know if there is an expiration date on this offer?
Interesting that BOA only does 1 hard pull for multiple apps in the same day. I believe Chase is similar. Is this true with most or all CC issuers?
It would be very helpful if you start putting the date time stamps on the blog headers. Do you agree?

Writing a post on this at the moment, hope to have it live soon.

I do agree, it’s something Chuck (the other main writer here) and a lot of readers have been asking for recently. I’m hoping to have it display the publish date and author by the end of today.
