Update 5/2/26: Spirit Airlines has announced that it is shutting down with all flights cancelled effective immediately. Statement on the Spirit website states:
It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately. To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.
Update 5/1/26: WSJ now reporting that Spirit Airlines is preparing to shut down after the $500 million rescue package has fallen apart. President Trump has said they are still looking at the rescue package when questioned.
Update 4/22/26: According to WSJ the Trump Administration is nearing a $500 million ‘rescue package’ for Spirit Airlines. In return the government would receive warrants to take a potential stake in the airline.
Original post: According to Bloomberg sources say that Spirit Airlines could liquidate as early as this week. Spirit was going to merge with JetBlue before being blocked by the DoJ and then the deal was terminated by JetBlue. Spirit then filed for bankruptcy this August and was expected to exit this process this summer before rising fuel costs put additional pressure on the airline.
