Our Verdict
Nice deal for existing Sprint customers, not sure how this works with customers on the previous free plan.
Had the free unlimited sprint plan for 2 years. Ported to Tello, a Sprint mvno on 6/29/20.
Four days ago got an email from Sprint that a payment is due for period ending 7/29/20 and tells me to go to Sprint site to pay. Ok. I thought Sprint was all paid up. Apparently the credit card they had on file had expired so they were unable to get that last payment. The email said payment due by 8/21. I will pay it, but can’t online since I can’t get on that site as I am NO LONGER their customer. And their email says it is due by 8/21
At 3 AM last night there was a notification on my phone that there was “invalid credit card emergency calls only”. Tried a call, no service, get message “cellular network not available for voice calls”
At this point I think the problem is with Tello, as I didn’t at that point remember the Sprint email. I check the Tello app and see that they received the 7/29 bill payment, everything good to go, plenty of time and data left. I check the credit card that was used for the Tello payment. Yep, that was successfully used. I check to see if there is a problem with cellular networks. Nope. I call Tello from landline. It is outside their hours so have to leave message.
Then I remember the Sprint email for a payment they say is due 8/21. Yes they are due that, but how the hell can they stop my current service with another company? Bill me, wait til 8/21 for my payment at least, send me to collections if they want, but disabling my phone when I am no longer their customer?
Spent an hour chatting online before finally they gave me phone number to call to pay the bill and within a few minutes my phone was working again.
But how can this be legal? Stopping my phone when I have successfully ported it to another company? Been using that other company successfully for over a month, have paid 2 bills to that company?
Legal? Do you think it’s your right to have a cell phone? Anyway, it’s because you are using a Sprint MVNO. Pretty sure it’s one of the things you see in the terms if you shop around, it will say something to the effect that you need to make sure you on good terms with the underlying carrier before signing up with “any-name” MVNO.
Besides, it’s always a good policy to pay your bills and not burn bridges. The Sprint plan you were on was post-pay, so it always takes an extra month to catch-up compared to the pre-pay scene. When I closed out my Sprint BYOD free plan, the rep said they were waving the final monthly bill, but when I logged back in, all they waived was $2.00 of it. Not worth my time to discuss it further and it was still on auto-pay anyway.
A week later they emailed saying they wanted me back… hahaha.
According to Sprint agent this promotion expired July 2, 2020 😞
it did
This worked for me, but it was kind of a pain in the neck.
I went online to my Sprint account and the deal was there. My plan was to move my wife from AT&T prepaid to my Sprint account. She has an unlocked Pixel 3a. Chose the option for bring your own phone and port a number. The website and email made it seem like they would be sending me a sim card.
The next day, Sprint called me to complete the Port-In process because I didn’t put enough information in when I ordered the new line. I told them I didn’t want to complete it until the sim card arrived. The CSA was confused. I asked, you’re sending me a sim card, right? She couldn’t see that on my order. A couple minutes on hold and I was transferred to the person who then took my info to send me a sim card. It arrived two days later. I called to activate it and port my wife’s number and got transferred from the main CS line to another line, and then back again. Not sure why for a common request – activate and port a number. The info I had for my wife’s AT&T account was wrong (my fault). They conference called AT&T and got the info and completed the port-in. An hour later, phone still wasn’t working. I called back and the CSA ran me through the checklist and after 3 steps I had already done prior to calling, he checked the ICC on his end and found that someone at Sprint had entered it wrong. He changed it and everything worked.
I had to jump through similar hoops when I got my Sprint account, but it was worth it, and this deal confirms that even more. I was fortunate enough to get my Sprint account during the $15 Kickstart promo, I now have 2 unlimited lines for $15/mo plus tax. That comes out to $19.47/mo
I hate calling Sprint when I have a problem, but thankfully I rarely do (sad coverage not withstanding). I already was willing to deal with weak coverage for $15/mo with one line. With two, it’s a no-brainer. Once the integration with T-Mobile is complete and their network expands a bit, I can’t imagine ever switching from the current deal I have.
ya u have the best deal out there. $15 kickstart was already the best, now with the free line wow!
I reserved a line and it created a virtual phone line. Haven’t activated any device yet. Anyone know if I can port over a number from another carrier to take the place of the virtual number?
Yes, I just did that to switch my daughters number and phone on to the free line
Just to make sure I understand
This is basically pay 1 line at full price and get 1 free line correct?
You can’t cancel the paid line and only have a free line.
Has anyone tried to do this and just use the 2nd line for a wifi hotspot?
It does not appear to include hotspot the the Unlimited On Us Plan.
Anybody successfully do this?
I’m on the $35 Kickstarter plan and it doesn’t offer me any $0 plans when I try to follow the process…
try now, they targeted more people and allow most SWAC and Kickstart
Thanks for the tip, it worked this time!
Does active T Mobile customers have same option, since Sprint and T Mobile merged?
It seems that having the $65 unlimited plan on a leased phone does not count as eligible for this plan as well.
A lot of people here (myself included) are currently on Sprint’s free unlimited plan and kinda just stuck in limbo because they have said they will be continuing that program “until further notice”. It was supposed to end around April. I think that free unlimited data is a ridiculously good deal overall, but the service is overall pretty unreliable and unacceptable if you have to spend even something like $20 a month for it. Keep in mind I am in CT, which is supposed to be one of the best states for Sprint, and its still had spotty coverage even in some of the more populous cities.
Cricket wireless, Visible, and Xfinity Mobile all seem like decent potential fallbacks once this plan does end. Will need to do more research.
+1 I think Sprint is just adequate in my experience over the last year, but yeah, not going to pay full price for it.
P2 & I are on that free plan too. I don’t think we are in limbo though… if we do nothing, it’s going to be full price, x number of lines on the unlimited plan, starting July 1st. We stay, or we go.
If you log into the Sprint desktop website, click Change plan, it says what and when we are rolling into:
“Savings until 6/30/20; then $60/mo. for line 1, $40/mo. for line 2 and $20/mo./line for lines 3-5 with AutoPay” Then add in taxes and a couple of piddly fees.
When they extended the plan this last time, they adjusted the end date more than a month prior to the end date. So, I don’t see it happening this time but I am waiting to pull the trigger on porting for now. There are so many choices, but I’d go back to Verizon before paying full price on Sprint.
Aaah didn’t realize July they marked July 1st as the cutoff, I spoke with their support chat a few weeks ago and they said they had no definitive end date yet so they must have set that one recently. Probably time to start shopping.
Also- FYI for you and anyone else interested.
I found this spreadsheet online which lists pretty much all the known plans and their respective costs for every carrier. Pretty valuable resource. https://airtable.com/shrraH105YVJQF2Yr/tbluBQVMEbwFnClH3/viw8xy7NQRF9ZSIgs
Awesome, thank you.
no problem 🙂
I dug through that cell phone spreadsheet to pluck some names carriers I was not familiar with. Seriously considering Red Pocket, as I want one that uses Verizon towers. Slickdeals has a current deal post on them… 1 year prepaid, via eBay.
I wish I could stack it with some Paypal promo or Ebay code… probably not worth waiting until July Discover card 5% via PayPal though.
Wow unlimited data for $15 a month is pretty wild. I hadn’t even thought of buying a 1 year plan to save cost. My current plan has been to run with Mint Mobile for 3 months ($40 for 3 months, 3 gb per month) and then rotate over to visible or something once quarantine ends and I am actually away from wifi often enough to justify unlimited data.
But that red pocket deal is interesting too. Hope its still around once my mint mobile plan expires in 3 months. If you go with them, would love to hear your thoughts on their service!
Yeah, it’s “unlimited”, but throttled after a set amount to annoyingly slow speeds. I think that is reasonable.
But, Red Pocket got vetoed by P2. TOS says text messages are one person to another person…. and she has multiple sisters that like to go into chat fests (group chats over texts).
But, that was definitely the cheapest I could find on Verizon towers. So, I might do Red Pocket and she might be on something else. Still shopping.
But, there are cheaper options if you are willing to commit to a year, not on VZW towers. But if I am going to pay the qauzi-full price, I want something reliable.
I contacted Red Pocket about the supposed SMS banning issue. Said it was an issue with Iphone 6 and older… Prior to that question, I also thought about it more, and the group texts over our androids are MMS. Which look just like text messages, but are over a different service – basically just data.
So, I ordered one month SIM on Red Pocket for me… and if I like it, I will do the e-bay annual plan when it comes back… no longer on sale now. Of course, sale is gone as soon as the 5% off for Paypal via Discover is available. I did end up getting the 8GB 1 month plan for like $5 thru Red Pocket, but I went ahead and paid for the expedited shipping since I procrastinated about this for so long. I want to get off Sprint soon.
P2 is testing out Mint 1 week starter kit but I was not overly impressed. The d/l speed was actually better than Sprint, but the upload was pretty bad, which can make it feel really sluggish if uploading photos or browsing.
Lastly, I just sat through a very long chat session with Sprint.. hoping retention would offer me something I couldn’t refuse. Nope… “we have Unlimited… or you can drop down to 2GB for nearly the same price”. Waste of time. I let them know if they wanted to keep some of the 1 year free customers they should offer something mid-tier. Not everyone needs 50GB of data every month. My family literally didn’t use 50 GB in a year. Oh, but it comes with Hulu and hotspot. 🙄
Gadget - Bank Bonus Geek Yup I was OK with my Mint service but I’ve hit some dead zones over the weekend. Seems like the coverage is comparable to/slightly worse than T-Mobile (was hoping the sprint merger would help things but it seems to not have made a difference, at least not yet). Definitely not sticking with them long term. Will run out the 3 months and then shop for something else.
I saw they had some outages over the weekend… on Tmobile, which is what Mint uses. I also read that they took down some of Sprint’s 5G service, so it’s possible that would impact other things as they unplug and modify equipt. Or, it could just be a DOS attack from China… who knows.
I guess it’s all in what towers you have where you travel and what is important to you. I just want the phone to be reliable in my normal travels… I use wifi and real computers for the majority of my data.
I don’t think we are even going to bother with Mint now. It was cutting out when trying to just call VM from our home. I don’t want to hear about it when SO has to go outside to get a clear call.
My Sprint is officially closed. When I chatted with Sprint the other day to verify closure they said they were going to waive some $8 charge that was left on my account… I don’t think the person knew that was my standard monthly fee, back before June 30th anyway. So, I might skate out of paying the $30 bill I was expecting because SO and I didn’t switch carriers until this month on various dates. Per some yahoo’s on Slick Deals… the final month they don’t prorate so it would have been $8 until the next bill, but I didn’t want to chance it, just in case the intel was wrong. Under that logic, we could have stayed until the day before statement end date. But when I chatted with Sprint previously, they said to expect a $65 bill for the month, assuming that one line remained on the plan up until the statement close.
So far we have been smooth sailing on Red Pocket CDMA Verizon… there was a little issue trying to get the SIM card setup on both phones, so wasn’t perfect. Just a short chat session to get up and running, so no horror story, but might have been worse if we didn’t have another phone to test the SIM in. I am guessing it was a VZW specific issue, not being able to activate the SIM without putting it into another phone, so someone doing another carrier could have a totally different experience.
Hit me up when & if you are ready to switch off of Mint. Overall very happy with Red Pocket on VZW, but it all depends on which carrier towers you have in your area. I think RP is a better deal than Mint if you are a light data user too. I plan to stay on month to month 3GB plan ($19.26 a month w/ tax) until the Ebay annual 2GB deal comes back. First month can be $5 for 8GB w/ referral code, then once you have the SIM, you can switch plans to one that is a better fit.
Gadget - Bank Bonus Geek Mint plan ends in about 3 weeks, so time to start thinking about new carriers. Will reach out regarding Red Pocket.
Sptint extended the offer until 04/30/21.
“Over the past year you have saved a significant amount of money with your BYOD 1 Year FREE Service promotion!will extend until 04/30/2021”
Dan Where did you see this? I wonder if you’re on a single line they did that?
I chatted with them around the same time you posted this and they said it was over for my account, that it ended 6/30/20. That’s also what my plan says, so I have to believe the are correct. So, the next bill would be basically full price. Even though it shows it will be $8 in the billing section… they calculate the next bill at the end of the month. It’s that whole post-paid thing, where if you do nothing, you get stuck with a full price bill and already working on another month of pull price by the time you notice the change.
That’s cool if you got targeted, but P2 & I did not. FYI AndreRamirez
Gadget - Bank Bonus Geek I spoke with sprint support explicitly asking about this just now and they were steadfast that this offer was not extended. Dan I would speak with a sprint rep in person to confirm that you didn’t receive this in error or something along those lines, don’t wanna continue service only to get hit with the normal pricing on your next bill.
Nobody on SlickDeals is reporting getting extended… so I guess you got really lucky Dan. And some of those folks know how to slice a penny in 4 places, calling retention, porting phones to Tello for bare minimum plans until they can find the next best deal, etc. FYI AndreRamirez
I feel good about my new plan… just wish I would have acted on it sooner, so Sprint will collect a full fee partial month from me. 15 months on two lines was a pretty good run. Not as good as some that did it for a year twice, or had more family members covered, but that’s ok.
