Our Verdict
Obviously not a huge bonus and the $5 non refundable fee makes it even smaller, but there aren’t a lot of nationwide bank bonuses so I expect this will still be popular and will add it to the best bank bonuses. They also offer a mega high yield savings account that earns 5% APY on your first $500 and 3% on the next $500 when you set up a $25 monthly deposit.

NH residents seem most likely to get approved.
Mine got declined — I’m in Texas
FYI – OOS applicants shouldn’t apply for St. Mary’s accounts. Mine was just closed after several weeks and all transactions are being undone. Representatives would only say that the account “shouldn’t have been opened in the first place.”
Same thing just happened to me. I filed a complaint just for the hell of it.
Same here…now I have to wait more than 2 weeks for them to mail a full balance via a check. They should have denied it without letting it slip through their online system. Be warned for any OOS users that this could easily happen to you. Don’t waste the time or credit check on such a small amount.
SAME
It looks like they code quite a few things as TRANSFER ACH ECC PPD ACH so we’ll see if any of it works.
I was just approved, I live in Maine. They did ask me why I was opening an out of state account and I told them for the 5% savings, which is also true.
Approved at 2/6 4/12 after haggling about not living in NH.
Outside of footprint. Sent the bank photos of DL and Utility Bill. Then received the following:
“Thank you for your application. Unfortunately we will not be able to proceed with your request to open an account electronically. Please visit one of our branches with proper identification if you wish to proceed. Thank you.”
Requiring all documents first but then requesting you to visit a branch?? The bank is a clown.
No they just don’t want a slew of far out of area folks taking advantage of the bonus, but they will consider close out of state
Applied 10/15. Got the “Thank you for your online account application. A member of our eCare team will contact you by the next business day to complete the process. If you have questions, please call our Member Contact Center at 1-888-786-2791.” message followed by the following back and forth…
[10/15/2020 12:50:10 PM]St. Mary’s Bank: Thank you for your application! In order to proceed we need a recent utility bill in your name for your current address. You can load these to the application under documents.
We also noticed that you are not located in our area. We are a New Hampshire based credit union. Why did you decide to do an application with us? Please advise. Thank you.
[10/15/2020 3:09:42 PM] FREAKYFLYGUY: I saw you had a savings account with 5% APY to $500 and 3% APY on $500-$1000. I’d be glad to upload a utility bill if being out side of NH doesn’t prohibit me from opening the chosen accounts. Thank you, FreakyFlyGuy
[10/19/2020 1:55:05 PM]St. Mary’s Bank: Thank you for your application. Unfortunately we will not be able to proceed with your request to open an account electronically. Please visit one of our branches with proper identification if you wish to proceed. Thank you.
[10/19/2020 2:04:35 PM]FREAKYFLYGUY: I understand. However, since I am outside of NH, a branch visit is not possible (as well as not being recommended during the current pandemic situation). May I suggest some indication during the online application that potential customers outside of your footprint need not apply? It may save a great deal of trouble for potential applicants that may be wasting their time by applying. Thanks. FreakyFlyGuy
Out of state, out of region. Worth a shot but it’s a no go…
I received that final message, after sending the utility bill and ID that they requested in previous message, but I also received a Docusign to sign where it says they used ChexSystems
Pretty much my identical experience & also received the same chex message TJ got in post below…I even told them we travel there a few times per year & thinking about buying a vaca home there (Which is pretty much true ironically) but they wouldn’t budge…oh well….move on to next candidate bank that is willing to give me free money…

– Looks like a no go unfortunately. I’m in CT, for reference
Applied and not instantly approved.
