This is a pretty good deal. We have seen similar or better deals in the past, they don’t come along very often.

I used to think Costco was great but now I’m struggling to find a reason to have a membership.
Pretty much all of their products that aren’t kirkland brand I can buy cheaper elsewhere with rebate apps, coupons and store sales. The savings on gift cards can be nice, especially the airline gc’s but not anything too amazing. The gas savings are irrelevant since it’s too far from my house to stop regularly and comes in at a higher price than shell since I order the Kroger VGC to build points and get my $1 off. I also don’t have to sit through a 30 minute line to fuel my vehicle.
Am I missing something? I know you can get crazy deals on expensive items if a warehouse location stops carrying it. But this is unpredictable and hard to take advantage of. I had my eye on a piece of workout equipment that wasn’t going to be sold at my warehouse anymore. The day the store opened with the mark down, they sold all 13 units in less than 4 hours. Can’t see having a membership just to play roulette with that.
4 hours? I mean I could understand your sentiment if it was 4 minutes… but when you really want something, 4 hrs should be enough.
Yeah the store is over an hour away and I’d have had to rent a truck to get the item + call up a friend to help me load and unload. Would’ve been hard to get over there with the rental in that timeframe.
I think savings are marginal on a lot of items especially when you compare it to the “ok I’m going to try for 10 minutes to find a better deal” bucket or say “you know what this might be a deal for Model XYZ of semipremium brand, but I’m happy to have lots of other similar brands for a slightly lower price”.
Otherwise:

Wait for free. Have not shopped at Costco in years except for free samples and food court.
The food court requires a membership, at least at my location they scan the barcode when making a purchase or using the self-service at the food Food
My email from Groupon says expires 9/6 so I’ll wait until September to renew as my understanding is that would then give me 13 months instead of 12.
This doesn’t work with renewals… and Costco actually will check your address and not let you redeem it since you have to present ID to get a card.
Now BJs and Sams club, different entirely and couldn’t care less if you sign up with a different email.

Good call on waiting till the 1st of the month. I’ve done this at BJ’s before, where they also give you till the end of the month a year after you sign up.
I got the $45 shop card deal when joining using Groupon recently. Not overly impressed; will stick with Sam’s when my year is up. Costco is freaking crazy with checking your membership card at the front door and comparing your picture on your card to your face when checking out!!
I joined for the first time in Jersey. Front door clerk couldn’t care less about the pic, just flashed my card from 10 feet away. Also, you can use the Costco app, which afaik doesn’t even have my pic so I just flashed my phone with the app when I forgot my card.
The Costco app does show your picture when you pull up the card in it.
My local Costco had no idea how to handle the StackSocial code, and StackSocial won’t refund because the code was claimed. I’m out $60. Maybe it’s a local problem, but be warned…
Could try another Costco or document it and dispute the charge?

I think this is best deal I’ve seen for a Costco membership. They haven’t needed to give away memberships like Sam’s does.
Yeah it has been free or more than free a few times, with some caveats. When I signed up last summer it was $40 shop card and a $40 off $250 online coupon, plus $10ish from a portal (or maybe Dosh). $10 if you could not use the $40 off $250 and -$30 if you could. Costco is nice but is the furthest away of the warehouse clubs from our house by 20 minutes so we only join when it is freeish.
Niet. Costco has no real competition, even in footprints that overlap with Sam’s Club, so it has no reason to ever discount its membership. People are just throwing their money at Costco memberships each year, either out of habit or because there are no other options for warehouse clubs.
Not all the time. The Costco near our overseas home sells a lot of things that absolutely cannot be found elsewhere in that country. $30 net might be wasted in the US but when we’re in the other place, having a US Costco membership means we have access to lots of unique things. Plus the membership is higher there and there are never any discounts.

what do you mean? there’s a reason their membership retention rate is around 90% and way above any “competitor”

Sam’s is awesome in my area. I dropped Costco, however, this a good deal.
Yeah Sam’s has gotten way better than it used to be. Their technology is also 100x better than Costco. Scan & Go via their mobile app is awesome. They’re also better for ordering items to be shipped to your house because they don’t mark up the prices and charge you shipping fees unlike Costco.
