Stop Abusing Referral Link Threads

We often allow readers to share their referral links and codes to help them earn some additional money/points. The idea is that other readers will support readers that provide helpful comments on the site (remember you can click the ‘i’ button next to somebodies name to see their comment history).

Recently a lot of readers have been trying to game these referral link threads. If this continues to happen at the same rate we will be forced to no longer offer the option to share your links.

  • Only share your referral links when it specifically states its allowed. It’s always very clear when you can share links. Please no more ‘not sure if this is allowed, just delete it if it isn’t’.
  • Don’t send e-mails to other readers regarding referral links. This should go without saying but if you have one readers e-mail link from another bonus then you shouldn’t be sending them unsolicited e-mail links for other bonuses.
  • Only share your link/code once.

The time for warnings is over. People found breaking the rules will find all of their referral links removed from the site and will be banned from posting links in the future. I understand gaming things is part of this hobby, but don’t shit where you eat. Moderating these referral link threads unfortunately takes a huge amount of time and it’s incredibly frustrating when people break the rules and waste our time.

It seems that all my links are autoremoved because I once posted a referral from a VPN. I’ve never infringed upon any of these rules and have provided some valuable contributions in my time here. Not sure why this is occurring outside of that explanation.

I’m seeing any of my posts that contain just a link auto-removed as well. I’ve not commented via VPN, so not sure what could have triggered it.

I don’t want to break the rules and add text along with the link (as the posts usually say not to), but others commonly do that, so I’m left choosing between my link being auto-removed or bending the rules with the crowd in order to get it to post.

Is there a way for those of us who legitimately contribute, but somehow have ended up flagged as spam to get our comments manually reviewed?

Very sorry that yall have to deal with this. Some people really suck. It’s in all of our best interests to keep this hobby sustainable and civil. Good to get a PSA like this out once in a while

…and reminder: don’t call the bank

Hobby? You privileged mother.. Rule #1: Don’t hoard points! You never know when you’re gonna get Bonvoy’d or devalued or …bankrupt.

I don’t know if this is possible, but can you prevent people below a certain post count from posting in referral threads? Many of the abusers have a low number of posts. When I use someone’s referral, I look for familiar names who have made positive contributions to the community via their posts (familiarity doesn’t necessarily equal positive though). Can a minimum of 10, 25, 50, whatever posts be required before posting in a referral thread? Or a baseline of upvotes? (I sometimes wish there were a way to downvote, though I recognize how that can be abused.) Make people earn the right to post in a referral thread.

William Charles I wonder if you could set a criteria for people to place their referrals on the site? Flyer Talk has something similar based on posts and time registered on the site. If the registered person doesn’t meet the criteria the system will not let him/her post the referral. Maybe 1 year as a DOC subscriber and XXX # of posts? Just a thought. Whatever you do works with me, I’m just happy I found the site.

Wait, how many XXX posts do I need to qualify? 😂

Good idea tho.

If anyone reading this post is unaware of the Service Credit Union $100 to both Referrer and Referee deal, check it out. Available nationwide if you first join the ACC (very easy). I used one of the codes there to apply and received my $100 Referee fee the next day, thanks to all the DPs about the process, mobile check deposit, etc. Just pick out one of the fellow posters whom you think is most deserving and use his/her code. Have since referred two family members and received an extra $200 easy money, with more to hopefully come soon!

Thanks, DoC and community. I strongly agree that William Charles and Chuck run this site and can set whatever rules they want.

Spamming links? Ugh. C’mon guys. Stick to trolling about politics and the Corollavirus. Much less frustrating.

I see this a lot and think it’s pretty infuriating too. When I click on the links of the people violating the rules, as well as those posting referrals on the proper page, they almost always have 1 post count – their referral link. Seems like referrals bring out the worst of the bottom feeders lurking on this website.

Could you format that as PIC(1), please? 😉

Simple solution- make it so anyone who’s profile name starts with A and ends in Z is automatically the top comment on referral posts.

Sounds perfectly reasonable.
