This stacks with the normal 5% you get from using a RedCard. Advantage of this offer is that it works on gift card purchases (normal 5% doesn’t).

The 5% discount seems to have worked for me even though I didn’t pay with Redcard, and I had actually closed my Redcard a few days ago. I paid with target gift card. (I bought groceries.)
The regular 5% Redcard discount does work on certain gift cards, not all.
The red card discount can be used on purchasing gift cards in-store and online, though only certain ones get the discount. I usually put the gift card in my online shopping cart to see if the discount is given until I total it out and pay, this way it helps me determine which cards work and others don’t. Their site says no Target gift cards and prepaid cards like Visa/MC. I usually use the discount when purchasing phone cards for T-Mobile and Starbucks cards personally. Depending on what card you use, there are sometimes promotions in the weekly ad. I know the other day there was a five-dollar discount for purchasing prepaid phone cards of $50+ like T-Mobile and Verizon and I did that on top of the 5% discount. It just depends on if there’s a promotion or not. Sorry, I could not find a dedicated list of participating cards, I usually just test on their website first. The target website has a good number of different gift cards that it
might work with so it’s worth a try putting it in your online cart to see.
Does NOT work on gift cards even target gift cards, has the same endless list of exceptions as the RED card 40 dollar promo

Did not work for buying a visa prepaid card
The T&Cs on this specifically exclude gift cards and I tried to buy an Apple gift card that didn’t include this 5%.
