Target REDcard Churning Is Dead

A lot of readers like to sign up  for a new Target REDcard debit card once every 90 days to get the $40 coupon promo which is often available. They are now no longer approving new cards for those who recently closed them, even if it’s been longer than 90 days. One reader heard from a Target rep that you now need to wait one year before getting another card. More recent data points indicate that 6 months is the timeframe (1, 2, 3).

A couple of months back they stopped allowing the $40 coupon to be used twice, so it went from a $80 deal to a $40 deal. Now, they are limiting approvals to longer intervals. RIP

Going forward, some people might value the REDcard and just keep theirs. Other people might not care for it and just close their card out and see if they are eligible in another year.

Does anyone know if you have to wait a certain amount of time after opening the card or using the coupon, to close the card?

Language on the reloadable card is now once per lifetime: “Limit one (1) acquisition credit per guest in their lifetime”

P1 & P2 Debit card churn DP:

Last debit opened: 4/4/23
Last debit activated: 4/15/23
Last debit closed: 4/30/23

Denied: 7/10/23 The mailed letter stated checking account information is already attached to an existing Target Debit Card account. (Even though I hadn’t used the same checking account info as the past card)

Denied: 8/12/23 (same excuse)

Approved: 10/2/23 (Day 181 from last debit card opening)

The Reloadable has been a little more squirrelly on the timeframe between approvals. It’s not a cut-and-dry number of days and I think it’s possible they basically do a random reset twice during the year. My last card was in August and probably won’t try again until January. I got the card in Nov 22, Jan 23, and Aug 23. Some other people were able to get the Reloadable card in Mar 23 & then again in Aug 23 though so it’s not a set 181-day rule.

P1 & P2 DP: Churning at 183 days from last approval still works for debit card.

10/02/23 Last debit card approved. (DP noted above)
04/02/24 New debit card approved.

Card arrived today, and activated.

And, most importantly, the Target app accepted my $50 off coupon, even though I done an App scanned offer in Oct 2023.

Churning is not Dead… just severely injured, with 181 day churns and no double-dipping. The Reloadable churn is dead.  Chuck

I heard from a redcard agent that the timeframe is now 6 months from last application date.

My last reloadable was December last year, and I was declined in March, but approved just now. It is probably the time interval

I will miss having the customer reps yell at me when I would call to cancel the card. They would get very angry. It was the highlight of churning the Target REDcard.

The Reloadable Red card can be closed online right from the account page.

I have spent the past week trying to load the $40 coupon into the app – and still not having any success WTF – poor rollout on the part of Target.

Doesn’t work much better instore. Manager just gave a $40 discount after wasting too much time. There’s incomplete directions about loading to the app somehow on the coupon. Joke.

Or that. What Lochquel did might work even better, new way to double-dip)

Hank Somebody posted how to do that, not the most intuitive process but should not take a week. You need to poke around the Wallet part of the app, scan the code, then you need to load the coupon to offers. Might need to restart the app once or twice. Good luck.

does each opening count towards 5/24?

Scott

Debit cards aren’t credit cards. There is no credit pull, so no implications with 5/24.

Don’t expect anyone to answer your question when you haven’t taken even 1 minute to educate yourself on the most basic info on 5/24. smh!

Thanks for your useless reply. I do know the basics of 5/24 and that store credit cards may count. Thats why I’m a bit surprised someone would open a Target card every 90 days. I didn’t realize (and it wasn’t clear from the headline) that the REDcard cames in a debit and credit version.

Opening a Target CREDIT card every 90 days for some chump change sounds like /r/shittychurning material though.

You jumped on this snarky guy to defend yourself, but didn’t even directly thank the Scott guy who gave you your answer without a fuss. It’s just the internet. Debit is the 14th word of article, first line. You’ll never game a system by only reading a headline. The churning and bonus culture is a lot of research and churning by definition of most cards, is a multiple year project.

I always ignored the mentions of this deal because (1) I live in NYC and never shop at Target, (2) I didn’t understand how $40 was such a great deal. Didn’t realize that it could actually be $80 or even $160 and that you could do it multiple times a year. Wow. Live and learn.

$320 actually if you and P2 would’ve gotten the reloadable and target card!

That’s assuming that I have a P2 and that I could routinely use the coupons in person rather than only online. As I said, I live in NYC. But yeah, for those who could really cash in on this, it seems pretty incredible.

Learning about this now is pointless.

Double/triple dipping was mentioned in the comments of literally every Target Red post going back 4 years.
