Our Verdict
Alliant offer three credit cards: this card, a card that doesn’t offer rewards and a 3% cash back card(first year, then it drops to 2.5%). You’re limited to one card with Alliant, but you can product change between the cards. It’s made even better by the fact that you could at a later stage product change this card into the 3% card and still get that rate and the annual fee waived first year. If I was targeted, I’d be jumping all over this deal. If you have any questions about Alliant please read this post first as they are most likely answered there.
I signed up for this card just a few days before the bonus was announced (with desired CL). Called them up today and asked if I was eligible. The CSR said that I’m automatically eligible. I got the impression that anyone who gets the card currently is eligible for the bonus. That’s in addition to the 0% interest for 12 months. Nice.
approved. only went for 10k SL. i have cards with CLs from 5-32k. 13k average, 12 cards. didn’t wanna push my luck for a 15k or higher so selected 10k. *read mixed dps about them so opted to play it safe.
i have checking, savings and ssl with them. 1+yrs old
821 TU accdng to their Fact Disclosure pdf which was provided immediately after submitting application.

applied before 8am CT (their time). needless to say, went to review. not sure if they ever do ‘instant approval’.
received an email about their decision around 11am CT. a little over 3 hr ‘quick’ turnaround. *this got me thinking maybe i left some ‘money’ on the table. O.o
i wonder how they are with veegeecee math & science? need to meet that 4k msr. hmm bbva funding is the suck right now. maybe when the dust settles down, i’ll go for a non-promo deposit account to fund 5k. seen some alliant positive dps (so far).
Pretty sure they don’t do instant approvals. Like you, I went with $10k limit when I was approved about a year ago. I’ve since upgraded to the AF version with intro 3% cashback.
I’ve already funded a BBVA checking, paid off $5k from my alliant checking, and then funded the savings today. Can confirm no issues, no CA fees and it takes about 2 business days for any payments (alliant transfer to cc) to post and open your available credit limit. I’m in California if that helps.
I’ll probably try to squeeze in a checking and savings for the wife as well. $10k at 3% so $300 at worst and $500 at best if the household limit isn’t hard coded into the deal.
nice going with those bonuses!
i’m not sure about being upgraded to that 3%. i think it needs 100k income(?) and im nowhere near that.
btw, did you have to inform alliant first before that large 5k ‘purchase’?
The upgrade was really easy and didn’t require any verification or even having to call. I did it through SM and they handled it for me without issue.
I didn’t call before the $5k charges. I’d like to think relationship matters but who knows (also have checking/savings/SSL).
i see. maybe i’ll upgrade after i get the bonus in 3 mos or do you think it’s best to wait 6 or 12 mos first? thanks for all the insights. i appreciate it.
I don’t think there’s any harm in doing it after a few months from opening. Worst case just SM and ask ” Hi I was targeted for a credit card offer and was approved. I now see another card that I believe would suit my needs better and would like to know if it’s possible to upgrade. ”
You were targeted and already bank there so there’s no need to worry that you’re pushing your luck with the offer and upgrade.
i see. thanks again! i’ll have to check if it’s going to be a HP for an upgrade.
It shouldn’t be a hard pull. Wasn’t for me. You don’t usually see HP with product changes.
FYI – $5,000 counted for me as a purchase when funding a new BBVA Compass Checking account.

Kills two birds with one stone, plus the 0% on Purchases for 12 mo.
Thanks
Their underwriter look at debt/income ratio too. I was declined for the 3% CC even after submitting my pay stab. Therefore my guess is that the targeted offer has nothing to do with the money sitting with them. You don’t need a large amount of deposit to get targeted, but if you MS with any of your CC and makes debt ratio high enough then they won’t target you for such offer.
Any knowledge on how you get targeted offers from Alliant? Is signing up from one of their checking accounts the best way to try?
Don’t know why I was targeted, but last December I received a bonus of 50,000 points for this card.
Now I’m hoping (probably in vain) to be targeted for an upgrade to the 3% card this holiday season, complete with new bonus.
Did you have a lot of money on deposit with them when you got targeted for the 50,000 point offer?
I don’t really remember. I have had at times up to $50,000 in IRA savings, but usually closer to $2,000 or less. I do have my social security check direct deposited in checking, but usually transfer it out shortly after receipt.
Was targeted last year around this time for the 40k offer. I use Alliant as my primary bank, usually between $5-10k in the checking account. It receives direct deposits, check deposits etc. Who knows what goes into being targeted but I’d guess it has something to do with your activity or lack thereof.
I suspect that you’re right and that you won’t be targeted for any sign up bonus on the 3% card.. I upgraded earlier this year and am happy I did because it’s come in handy more often than I thought it would (I’m usually always working on minimum spend). The BBVA $10k checking/savings accounts right now comes to mind.
In my experience, alliant is also very generous with credit card funding for bank accounts and coding everything as a purchase (rather than cash advance). Especially valuable if you have the 3% card.
