The Offer
No direct link (definitely targeted as links have your last 5 credit card numbers hard coded)
- American Express are offering some Blue Cash Everyday cardholders the opportunity to upgrade to Blue Cash Preferred and get the following bonus:
- $150 cash back after you spend $1,000 within the first three months
Card Details
- Annual fee of $95
- Card earns at the following rates:
- 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 in spend annually, then 1%)
- 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores
- 1% back on all other purchases
Our Verdict
They offered a similar upgrade option but for only $100 in June.  Keep in mind the annual fee is not waived for the first year, so really you’re getting $55 and also the 6% cash at supermarkets (best card for grocery store spend when not taking into account the annual fee). The good thing about upgrade offers is that they don’t do a hard pull and you’re also able to get the bonus if you’ve already had the card before (and can get the bonus in the future if you haven’t had the card before). If you have questions about American Express upgrade offers they will be answered here. General questions about American Express answered here.

Received this offer, which waives the annual fee but requires $2000 in purchases. To me, this makes it roughly equivalent to the $250 upgrade offer.
Upgrade to the Blue Cash Preferred® Card, with no annual fee in your first year, then $95. Plus, earn $150 back after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first three months. You will receive the $150 back in the form of a statement credit.â€
Just got this offer again for one of my two Blue Cash cards. This time it’s spend $2000 in three months for $250 cash back.
Did anybody get the $150 clawed back for downgrading shortly after?
Here’s an interesting DP for those who were not targeted for this offer.
I called to inquire if there were any upgrade incentives available to me at this time. The rep went to check, found this exact upgrade deal, and offered it to me. I accepted, as my grocery spend on this account has been minimal so far this year. Btw, upgrades/downgrades will not reset the $6K limit.
Called and asked. Nothing for my account
Doc, remind us again — I should NOT take this offer if I’ve never had a Blue Cash Preferred yet, right?
There is a DP of somebody doing an upgrade and still being able to get the sign up bonus but YMMV.
Does Amex do a HP for upgrades like this and the Regular Gold Card to the PRG?.
No.. DoC already covered in Verdict section.. see more details here

Thanks. My bad.
For those that have done this, does the card number remain the same? I’m sure the expiration date changes as well as the CVV but the reason I ask is for accounts linked to twitter/tweetdeck.
I have the upgrade offer but the only way I’d do it is if I can downgrade and recoup most of the AF.
Yes number remain the same.. Exp and CVV changes
Thanks.
Does anyone know what happened to the cashback already in the BCE account? Will it expire after upgrading? Thanks!
I don’t believe it will. I called in to downgrade from BCP to BCE and was told my reward dollars would remain.
Second this.
Does anyone know if upgrading resets your Amex Offers? I’m in the middle of doing the $50 Hulu offer and won’t get my credit before this upgrade offer expires.
No it doesn’t.. you will be fine.
Does anyone know if upgrading (or downgrading) will reset the $6000 grocery 6% limit?
