• American Express is offering some SPG personal cardholders spending bonuses. Register by April 30th and earn a $50 statement credit after each $1,500 you spend in eligible purchases on your card through June 30th, 2018. Up to $100

Our Verdict

Works out to be an additional 3.3% cash back plus the 1x SPG points per $1 spent you’d normally earn if you spent exactly $1,500 or $3,000. These targeted spending bonuses are common, usually sent out to people who will have their annual fee due during the bonus period. It’s still worth calling reconsideration to see if you can get another offer in addition to this if the annual fee is due during this period.

It’s a bit strange to see a statement credit offer instead of SPG points, but apparently the sign up bonus will be changing to a statement credit instead of SPG points soon anyway.
