The Fine Print

  • To be eligible for this offer, you must activate by 12/31/20, 11:59 p.m. E.T.
  • You’ll earn 5% Back for each $1 spent, on up to $2,000 in total spend on combined purchases in the reward categories listed below during the promotional period (4% additional Back on top of the 1% Back earned on each purchase). This equates to 5 points for each $1 spent, until you reach the $2,000 spend limit. After spending $2,000 on combined purchases in the reward categories listed below, you go back to earning 1% Back rewards for every dollar spent, with no maximum.
  • For a purchase to qualify for this offer, the merchant must submit charges to your credit card by the last day of the promotional period 12/31/20. All of your eligible purchases during the promotional period will be automatically counted, as long as you have enrolled by 12/31/20.

  • Rewards Categories: Internet, Cable, and Phone Services category merchants provide internet, cable, satellite television, radio, cellular, wireless data, and landline services.
  • In addition, if you purchase or pay for your internet, cable and satellite television, phone or related services in a merchant’s store that is not registered by the merchant in the applicable services category, the purchase or payment will not qualify; for example, phone bill payments in a merchant’s store that register to Chase as a telephone equipment store.
  • Utility category merchants provide electric, household fuel, water, and sanitation. Please note that purchases of equipment and some merchants that sell utility-related goods and services are not included; for example, electronics or other retail stores and merchants offering maintenance and cleaning services.
  • Insurance category merchants provide health, automobile, homeowners, medical, and life insurance.
  • This promotional offer is non-transferable and applies only to the account ending in the last 4 digits referenced in this offer. For more information about your rewards program, see your Rewards Program Agreement. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see chase.com/RewardsCategoryFAQs.

Our Verdict

We’ve seen this kind of offer from Chase many times before. Usually the sweet spot for most people is the Insurance and Utilities categories since the others might already be bonused for you on the Ink line of cards.

I’ve seen reports of this offer being sent out for the Sapphire Reserve card and for the Amazon card; most likely other cards as well. Haven’t seen a ton of people reporting this, might be more targeted than we’ve seen on other rounds. It’s possible this could show up at the Chase bonus checker as well (chase.com/mybonus), but most likely it’s only for those who got the targeted email.

I have a similar deal with only Phone, Internet, Insurance in September that expires tomorrow on Thankyou Preferred. They coded AT&T Fiber payment as AT&T Uverse in streaming services category and gave only 2X. I found it very strange as AT&T in Visa Merchant Category Map is coded as either phone or cable. But this is MasterCard and no way to verify without an actual transaction.

Never received an email like this. Are there opt-in settings required for marketing?

I got this on my CFU, but with “select streaming” instead of insurance. I hadn’t really been using my CFU much lately, although I’ve put a lot of spend on my CF with PayPal Key and through consistent offers of 10% back at Circle K gas stations, so I’m not sure if that played a role.

Wouldn’t it be better or on par to use Paypal Key with Freedom/Freedom flex to get 5x UR? The 2000$ limit is of course higher than $1500 quarterly limit for Freedom. Anything else that I am missing?

Between P1 and P2, we’ve already maxed out the quarterly bonus on 6 cards thanks to PPK, so it would’ve been nice to have been targeted for this promo.
