The Offer

Check your Chase Offers/BofA Bank Amerideals for the following deal:

  • Get 10% back on select Marriott properties when you spend $100 or more.

Our Verdict

We saw last similar offers for select Marriott properties, this new offer is broader and includes all Marriott properties. I’m unsure if this is found on other bank cards that share the same back end as Chase Offers.

FM notes that you should only use this at the final checkout to avoid the possibility of the temporary hold ‘using up’ the offer.

Stayed at an Autograph Collection hotel, with a 10% spending more than $100 offer, but it doesn’t seem to have been triggered. The transaction name doesn’t indicate anything about Autograph Collection – it just posts as the hotel name. Is Chase suppose to know a list of the hotels branded under the Autograph Collection?

Earn 10% cash back on your Marriott Bonvoy stay, when you spend $100 or more, with a $100.00 cash back maximum.

Offer expires 5/15/2024. Offer valid one time only. Complete payment for your stay must be made by 5/15/2024. Offer not valid on third-party purchases. Offer valid at all Marriott Bonvoy brands. Payment must be made directly with the merchant. Offer subject to availability. Please see website for open locations.

A few questions:

  1. The maximum is $100 cash back which means $1000 total spend. Does this have to be done in one transaction? I’m confused by the “offer valid one time only”. Is the offer considered completed after reaching $1000 total spend, or just after the first $100?
  2. What if I do two separate $50 transactions? Would this trigger the offer at all?

I have a variety of Marriott offers across my various Chase cards. All offers are for 10% off including AC Hotels, Le Meridien, element, etc. Separate offers. Usually only valid one time (i.e. if you have two hotel charges from the same hotel, only one will use the offer).

This may be a dumb question, but somebody help me understand the economic logic behind Chase Offers.

Presumably hotels pay Chase to run these offers as a promotion, right? Why, then, do they never appear on the appropriate co-branded card? I have a Marriott card, but all the offers are on SP. Wouldn’t Marriott specifically demand that Chase put them on their own card, because it makes their product more appealing? I mean, they want people to tell their friends “look, I have this awesome card that not only gives me status, but also has constant 10% off promotions,” don’t they?

I’m guessing a small percentage of all Chase CC cardholders have a Marriott card, so they could be trying to get someone else(a non Marriott Chase CC holder) to try a Marriott hotel instead of something else, if they have a 10% offer. Someone with a Marriott card already knows and stays at Marriott hotels, but that’s not the customer they are going after.

Sort of like the best deals for TV providers and cell phones are nearly always for new customers, or new lines. Loyal longtime customers generally don’t get great discounts. Similar here, they want new customers to try a Marriott hotel, so they offer a better deal to them.

Interestingly I put the bill of a restaurant in a Marriott on my credit card, and since it coded as a hotel the chase offer triggered

I wonder if this would work at Cosmopolitan Las Vegas if you book through them and not Marriott.

I’ve got Offers on Chewy (no pets), Lamps Plus (ugh decor), and plenty of makeup options (non-emo guy). No Marriott offers on our Sapphire or Freedom cards, a shame since we don’t need any dog food…
