The Offer
Discover is sending out an offer to select cardholders:
- Earn 5% back on up to $1,000 in spend at Gas Stations for July-August 2024.
Our Verdict
I assume this offer was sent out to targeted cardholders via email. A lot of people are using their Discover card now for gas due to the Q2 2024 5% category. Those who got this targeted offer can continue earning 5% at Gas Stations during July and August. The targeted offer 5% might be in addition to the regular 1% earn for a total off 6% (?).

Nothing here, but since gas stations are the Q3 Chase Freedom category, it won’t be a big deal. Interested to hear from folks who have received this offer to see if there is any common thread.
Discover It cardholder since 2019, $10,500 credit limit, PIF every month, ~770 FICO, $100k income, and I typically run anywhere from $300-1,000 through the card each month. Not a peep for this offer, though I did get an offer last winter for 4% back on the next $2,000 of charges on my Discover It Chrome which I’ve had since 2011 (back when it was called the Discover Open Road card) which I hardly ever use anymore and keep open primarily for age-of-account reasons.
The only thing I got from Discover was an email reminding me to activate the cashback categories for next quarter. Nothing for this promo.
This offer by Discover makes no sense
Well, it makes cents. Makes 5¢ per dollar. Makes 500¢ per hundred dollars. Very centsible!
With Citi Dividend’s 5% category for the third quarter also covering gasoline too, this makes a nice chunk of change.
Another option for 5% back on gas is CITI Dividend’s 3rd quarter offer. But that’s assuming you haven’t already maxed out your yearly cashback limit on groceries this quarter.
While the post at the top of the page says it could be a continuation of the current quarterly offer, I suspect this offer was targeted to people who hadn’t used it for gas this quarter. maybe even for people who had registered but didn’t use it after registering. I don’t see why they would target people who were using it for gas a lot already this quarter so far.
The one targeted Discover offer I got last year (by snail mail, not by email) for 5% on general spend was after I hadn’t used my Discover card for maybe over a year, because of Chase targeted quarterly spending offers I’d been using instead. But now that Chase targeted offers seem to be nothing more than Max and Max and Max these days, I’m using my Discover card more again, so I would be surprised to see more targeted offers for myself now.
A friend of mine swears that the trick to get these offers is to stop using the card for a period of time. Tried it once and actually worked.
Shame, nothing. I just went and disabled my promotional emails from Discover now. The amount of spam they send is annoying (I’m pretty easily irritated by promotional emails) and not worth the bonus you get combined with the small potential of being targeted.
Really? I only get maybe one, occasionally two, emails a week from them, mainly offering their identity protection.
I didn’t get this offer myself. Thinking Chase is going to have gas this next quarter.

Per week? I’m at two to three per month on promotional emails. Four is a busy month.
On other notes you can talk (that involves calling them) and ask the automated system for customer service (twice to get though – if asking on the automated system has not shown offer but going the following way has from time to time a better chance of working as long as an offer is out there on your account) then ask the account manager (first line customer service) about promotions and they will transfer you to that team. I have seen other offers but personalty quite a few times have gotten extra 3% on up-to $1,500 spend (for a total of 4% on general spend). Somewhere on this site is a post just for that.
Lastly you can close out the account and open a new one (or open a second account) and get the cash back match (might want to double check that as things can change).
Off topic but looks like most of the shell gas stations at least the 2 I tried do not take discover anymore for some reason. This is northern Illinois
As per usual with targeted Discover offers mentioned here…nothing.
