[Targeted] Terps Credit Card: Earn 5x On Gas, Grocery & Restaurants

Update 7/3/22: this 5x gas, grocery, restaurants is back again for 2022. (ht Eric and Paul)

The Offer

No direct link to offer, sent out via e-mail. Subject line is ‘It’s time to reward yourself!’

  • Terps is offering some credit cardholders 5x points per $1 spent on gas, grocery stores and restaurants from July 1 – September 30, 2021

The Fine Print

  • Terms and conditions: Bonus points apply to applicable purchases made between 07/01/2021 to 09/30/2021 based on Visa merchant category codes (MCC).
  • CU Campus Card Services makes every effort to include all relevant merchants for bonus point earnings.
  • However, even though a merchant or some of the items that it sells may appear to fit within a bonus point category, the merchant may not have a merchant code in that category, and in those cases purchases will not be eligible for bonus points. 5x points: earn 5 points per net dollar spent at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants. Rewards are only earned on Terps Card Rewards accounts, selected at the time of application.
  • “Purchases” do not include balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable.
  • To be eligible for this bonus offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. Transactions are subject to the account opening disclosure and your Credit Card Agreement.
  • CU Campus Card Services reserves the right to refuse any application or transaction. Allow up to 60 days for bonus points to be applied.

Our Verdict

Some readers will still have this card from when it offered a 50,000 point bonus. There was a lot of drama with points being removed, point value being decreased and a number of other issues.

The best redemption has been for travel but they often will have inflated prices and you have to pay over $30 booking fee. So points aren’t close to 1 cent. I just finally used up all points as they were close to expire and I will be done with Terps.

PSA – TERPS scrutinizes big purchases, at least they did for meeting SUB when I got this card few years back. They clawed back the points earned from gift card purchases. I won’t be surprised if they go over big grocery purchases with fine tooth comb again. Just something to keep in mind if you guys are planning to get gift cards from grocery stores. Things may have changed now but not guaranteed to get bonus points.

How did they know that your large purchases were for gc? How long after they they were awarded were they clawed back?

There is a thread for it here when the SUB offer came out. But, they comb over big purchases at grocery stores and asked for receipts if you wanted points reinstated. I cant recall exactly but in my case it was few days after the points were clawed back. I had to fight and submit complaint to Illinois AG or some other authority and then they allowed me to make “valid” purchases to get the points back.

The 5X offer on gas, grocery & restaurants is back. I received an email with the subject “Get more this 4th of July!”. Here are the terms.

1Terms and Conditions: Purchases qualifying for the 5X bonus points for gas, groceries, and restaurants must be made between 7-1-22 and 9-30-22 and will be determined exclusively by the coding category specified by the merchant. Not all purchases will qualify for the bonus point offer. “Purchases” do not include balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind. Eligible purchases are limited to purchases for good and services minus returns and other credits. To be eligible for this bonus offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. If we in our sole discretion determine that you have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this offer in any way or that you intend to do so (for example, if you cancel or return purchases you made to meet the required spend), we may not credit bonus points or we may take away points from your account. We may also cancel this Card account. Allow up to 60 days after qualification period for points to be applied. Transactions are subject to the account opening disclosure and your Credit Card Agreement. Transactions eligible for the Pay with Points option are limited to purchases only. I got the email but I have $15k of MSR to meet in the next 2 1/2 months so I have no time for Nickle and dime stuff plus before they lowered the value of points for a while. They are not trustworthy.

Eh, <3 month window & theyre known to just take points away or close accounts, I wouldn't bother. That 4% uncapped grocery Verizon card though, that's got me thinking about porting a number over lol

Bob,

About how much did you spend last year during the promo?

$200 = 24,000 points, so it’s not 5%.
