TaxAct Settlement
Settlement Lawsuit (check your email spam if you were affected for an email about this as well)
This lawsuit was brought on behalf of TaxAct users who allege that TaxAct purportedly shared with third parties (including Facebook and Google) certain of its users’ personal and financial information without permission. TaxAct expressly denies any liability or wrongdoing.
Who Is Eligible?
If you used a TaxAct online do-it-yourself consumer Form 1040 tax filing product and filed a tax return using the TaxAct online product at any time between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022, or your spouse filed a joint tax return using the TaxAct online product during that same period, you should read the Notice as you may be entitled to a cash payment and the free use of TaxAct Xpert Assist for your tax year 2024 return.
How Much?
The settlement total is around $17.5M. The actual amount paid to a consumer is estimated at approximately $18.65 for each claim.
TaxAct will also provide Xpert Assist to all Settlement Class Members who submit a valid Claim Form and who return to prepare a 2024 tax return on TaxAct’s website using any TaxAct online do-it-yourself consumer Form 1040 tax return filing product (including TaxAct’s free product). Xpert Assist provides one-on-one advice over the phone from real tax experts and allows for personalized tax advice.
Important Dates
- The Claim Form must be submitted no later than September 11, 2024.
- The Final Approval Hearing is scheduled for November 21, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. PT.
Our Verdict
Filing deadline is soon. Hopefully this turns into an easy few dollars for those affected.
Hat tip to readers Eric and Gadget
Does anyone know why they write this sentence –
Please note that if you entered an email address on your claim you will NOT receive a confirmation email.
Isn’t this counter-intuitive that if I provide an email I won’t receive confirmation email so should I not provide email? if so then how will they send email confirmation lol ?
I have seen this in case of other claims as well.
Isn’t this so counter-intuitive?
I have seen that many times. They write that so you aren’t left wondering why you didn’t receive a confirmation email. They want our email address in case they need to follow up with us later on in the process.
Your better question should be why don’t they send a confirmation email. That I can’t answer because it makes no logical sense!
For Philip and anyone else that used TaxAct during the period mentioned in the post and are afraid that they deleted the email(s), I received a “FINAL Reminder” from Kroll Settlement Administration LLC [email protected] early this morning.
I never received the 1st Notice but I did receive the 2nd, 3rd and the 4th notice (today’s).
So check your Inbox and Spam for this email to see if you are part of the eligible class.
Chuck, feel free to add this info to the post as the deadline is fast approaching. For any of that you are curious (probably none of you), I have NOT submitted my claim yet.
I didn’t receive the email or it got deleted from the spam directory (despite me checking it daily).
I used taxact, but no idea how to file without the claim id
Thank you! I got the email this morning, finally
I got the email but totally forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder; I just submitted it.
Used taxact, found the email in spam, and submitted a claim
$18.65 is based on a 5% claim rate. So assuming 100% claim rate the actual payout would be < $1. Still, most likely it would be between $5-$10. Not great but better than nothing.

Mine was also in spam – so thanks for posting this. They sent me two emails and one had my class member ID in it. I really liked having an alternative to Intuit Turbotax software as they are also such an evil company..
Thank you for the post .. found it in SPAM as well!
Got 2 notices about this. So finally signed up. Now the only thing I want from them is my $19 🙄 Because I will never use their services again.
Where Do We File For Claim, is there a link?
Start reading from the top and stop when you get to “Settlement Lawsuit”. That holds the link. Jason Kan
