TD Bank To Use Mastercard Payment Network For Debit & Prepaid Products And Why You Might Care

A few days ago TD Bank announced a new partnership with the MasterCard Mastero Payment network, at the start of 2016 all TD Bank debit cards and prepaid cards will run on the MasterCard payment network. Currently these cards are running on the Visa network.

The reason this announcement is significant is that TD Bank also offers a suite of rewards credit cards that are quite lucrative, currently all the cards offer a sign up bonus of $200-$250 and one offers 5% cash back on dining, groceries, gas and cable, phone and utility bill payments for the first six months.

Typically when a card changes payment networks, the credit card issuer considers it a new product and it’s possible to get the sign up bonus again. At the moment TD Bank has not announced that credit cards will run on the MasterCard payment network, likely because they have an existing contract with Visa that isn’t due to expire in the short term. I suspect when that contract does come up for renewal that TD Bank will switch all of their credit card products to MasterCard and it will be possible to get the sign up bonus again, although that is merely speculation.

  • They must have been playing around with the website previously, as far as which states can apply. When I go back in now, it only lets you choose from 16 states like it used to.

  • This will most certainly affect the Go and Connect cards. I use both to manufacture Aeroplan Miles.

      • Both cards are issued by TD in the US, as is the Aeroplan card. US-Europe in business class on Swiss for 45K miles and $27? Yes please:-)

  • Wish they would open up their products to the whole country rather than just the east coast.

      • Are you sure? I thought I read on another forum somewhere recently that it's still not nationwide, but that could have been wrong or out of date.

        • Just checked it out now and the system appears to be accepting nationwide apps. It used to just have like 14 states from the dropdown.

      • I remember reading somewhere that as long as you waited 3 months after closing you were eligible again. And since they have two cards with this offer, you could in theory keep opening and closing them, alternating every 6 months.
