Eligibility
This offer is available nationwide.
The fine print indicate that this offer is only for those who received it via email. According to the CSR I spoke with, this offer is only available for existing TIAA retirement account holders who want to expand their relationship to include banking.
Update: We’ve added an offer link with less restrictive language that doesn’t include the existing-client requirement. This offer link should work even for someone without a relationship. I’d recommend getting a copy of the offer for your records.
The Fine Print
- This offer will be available for a new TIAA Direct High Yield Savings account, applied for online or by calling 844-567-8939 using promotion code S106MB250
- Only one (1) offer is available per customer
- This offer
is only intended for the addressee of the email that was received, may not be combined with any other offers from TIAA Direct andis not available to existing savings customers - TIAA Direct will credit a $250 bonus to a new High Yield Savings account if the account is opened by 12/5/2016, at least $15,000 is deposited within 10 days of account opening and at least that minimum balance is maintained in the account every day through the 90th day after account opening
- Funds transferred from an existing TIAA Direct account do not count toward the qualifying minimum balance for this promotional offer
- The bonus payment will be reported as interest to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
- If the qualifications described above are met, the $250 bonus will be credited to the account within 91 to 104 days of account opening, provided that the account remains open and is not overdrawn or subject to any holds, restrictions, or legal action or dispute on the bonus payment date
Avoiding Fees
There is no monthly maintenance fee for this account.
There is also no mention of an early account termination fee on this account but the account needs to remain open until you receive the bonus.
Our Verdict
The APY on this account isn’t bad, but still isn’t quite the ~1% you can get with other high-yield savings accounts.
If you keep $15,000 in this account for 90 days you’d earn a total of $274 ($250 from the bonus and ~$24 regular interest). Overall, you’ll net ~7% APY interest rate which is quite good. Because of that we’ve added this to our list of the best savings account bonuses.

Hat tip to depositaccounts.com
Opened on 12/5/17, funded on 12/7/17, bonus received on 03/05/17.
Great, easy bonus!
Received mine a week ago, exactly 90 days from account opening. Does anyone know if TIAA is churnable? I got both the checking and savings bonus for 400. However, I actually really like them as a bank. If you link external accounts with them, they send trial deposits but don’t pull them out. May come in handy in the future for prepaid cards.
Received mine today as well after funding on the first week of December
nothing yet with a funding on 12/15; anyone got the bonus with a funding around mid dec.? thx
Received mine today with funding on 12/5. I’m sure yours is coming soon!
Opened mine on 12/3, funded the $15,000 on 12/8 and received the bonus today, exactly 90 days from account opening.
DP – Was not targeted, didn’t have any accounts with them
11/28 – opened account
12/1 – funded $15k from Ally ACH
2/26 – $250 bonus posted “Balance Cash Reward” (90 days post open)
Will probably keep the account open through another statement cycle and then close out.
Thanks as always DoC!
3/30/17 – closed today via phone. Agent made it easy, you can close with 3 options:
1 – transfer funds out (max of 5k / day *from* TIAA, presumably you could do all of it via ACH pull from another bank)
2 – mail a check, but this was with a $5 fee (possibly because it was a high balance, still had all $15k in the account
3 – answer some credit bureau questions and they would transfer the full amount today to an external account I had saved in TIAA (in my case, Ally), and then they would close it for me after the transfer cleared in 2-3 business days.
I chose #3..
William Charles – could you add to the “how to close” post?
Done, great comment thanks.
DP not targeted, have retirement account with them, opened acct 11-23, funded 11-29, received bonus 2-21.
I deposited 15k and my wife deposited 15k thru mobile deposits….I opened the savings a/c over phone and my wife over online (both of us using bonus code)…
I received IRS Tax withholding form to fill up my signature and SSN..I just completed and mailed it this evening…When I called today and talked to a CS Rep, I have been told that it’s intended mainly for customers who have retirement accounts and there is no guarantee that I will get $250 bonus even though I am eligible as I met all the requirements….
My wife didn’t receive any form to fill up…She called in few minutes after me and talked to another CS Rep and she got the message that she is eligible and she will receive bonus 7 to 10 business days after 90 days (02/27/17) and there is no need to fill up any form!!!!!
After opening, I got a letter saying that if I meet the requirements, which are simple ($15k for 90 days), I’d get the bonus. The letter was very clear about their rules, which I appreciate.
I did the initial deposit via phone when I called to open the account. They sent a signature card in the mail.
If they don’t pay the bonus and you met the requirements, call the CFPB.
Thanks for updating this. It’s such an easy bonus now! What a difference from the last one I did, HSBC…
I have opened the saving account yesterday online.
I need some help to deposit money from my external bank, us bank.
Is there some charge from US bank to transfer money to TIAA ?
And also for the transfer out money from TIAA to my US bank ?
How can I do that ? Just transfer out money from TIAA or should ask money from TIAA in US bank system ?
Thanks.
I don’t know all charges by each individual bank off-hand, and it might depend which account you have.
Most bank accounts I’ve had don’t charge a fee to do an ACH transfer from one account to another, but there are some that do, so either research or contact your bank to find out.
So to be clear, you all are saying you can have an interest checking account open from their other offer and open up a savings account with this new offer and get this savings bonus? They kept telling me that will not work as savings bonus will not actually post as can only do one offer per person. Not correct?
This is an important question. I’d like to know too.
I have the same question since I opened a checking account with them for an offer (still open and offer received a couple months ago). I sent them a secure message through their online banking maybe drawing attention to me, but I used a legitimate direct deposit for the checking bonus so I’m not worried. Plus I’d be giving them $15k for a time…
If they say I’m not eligible, I will terminate my relationship with them until the next offer.
They replied fairly quickly saying that I am eligible, so I’ll probably go ahead and open the savings account as well.
