The Offer
- TIAA Bank is offering a bonus of $250 when you open a new checking account and complete the following requirements:
- Make qualifying direct deposits totaling at least $1,000 within 90 days of account opening
The Fine Print
- This offer is only available to customers opening their first TIAA Bank Yield Pledge Checking Account by 11/29/2019, applied for online from this webpage or by calling the number referenced above. This offer is not available to previous or existing Yield Pledge Checking Account customers and it may not be combined with any other checking account offers from TIAA Bank. This offer is intended for addressees of mail and email correspondences only and is not transferable. Limit 1 reward per household whether the account is joint or single.
- In order to receive the $250 cash bonus from TIAA Bank, you must (1) open a new Yield Pledge Checking Account by 11/29/2019 and then (2) initiate one or more qualifying direct deposits totaling at least $1,000 that are credited to your new Yield Pledge Checking Account within the first 90 days of the account being opened. Account opening deposit must be new money (funds transferred from another financial institution) and may be satisfied with a qualifying direct deposit. Qualifying direct deposits include electronic deposits into your account of your (1) pension, paycheck, and government benefits (including Social Security) by your employer or the government; and (2) other regular income, such as annuity payments. Transactions that do not constitute qualifying direct deposits for this offer include, but are not limited to, person-to person transfers, transfers between your TIAA Bank accounts or accounts you have at other banks or financial institutions (including investment and brokerage firms), wires, and checks deposited by any means. TIAA Bank expressly reserves the right to determine, in its sole and absolute discretion, whether any deposit constitutes a “qualifying direct deposit” for purposes of this offer.
- If the qualifications described above are met, the $250 cash bonus will be directly deposited into your Yield Pledge Checking Account within 120 days of the account opening date, only so long as your account has remained open and is in good standing on the date the reward is paid. This offer expires on 11/29/2019. Keep this offer for your records.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Checking account has no monthly fees
Early Account Termination Fee
Account must be kept open for 120 days
Our Verdict
Previously the best checking bonus we’ve seen from TIAA was $150, so this is an extra $100 and the requirements are exactly the same. This bonus is definitely worth doing, requirements are relatively easy and it’s relatively rare to see nationwide bonuses this big from smaller financial institutions. We will add this to our best checking bonuses page.

Not targeted, no bonus. Closed account via SM.
Still no bonus. giving it till tomorrow before I close out the account. Was not targeted but used real DD
Same here, it has been over 120 days. No bonus.
No bonus if not targeted. At least it’s been 120 day and can close without fee.
bummer. no bonus for me either as of today’s date. wasn’t targeted but was hopefuly the $250 would hit..
Day 120 for me TODAY!
They verify each account opened as part of the promotion with the marketing team. Called in the other day and was told that the marketing team did not have any records of me being targeted – hence no bonus. Well – it is what it is…
I will wait until 120 days. If there is still no bonus, I will close it right away.
Has anyone gotten this bonus yet?
Nope, still no bonus and used real DD
I have not received it. I wasn’t targeted, but figured I take a chance.
Not targeted, real DD, still waiting.
Same here. The terms said the bonus would be paid out by April 8 so we might have to wait until then to know if it worked.
I met the requirements for this one, now just waiting. (I did not get a mailer but I do have a retirement account with them, so thought it was worth a try). Meanwhile they gave me $5 for trying their mobile check deposit feature, so I am $5 ahead.
Add me to the +5$ club too no bonus yet as I wasn’t targeted, but figured it was worth a shot
I have a retirement account through TIAA, so I might go for this one and do a legitimate DD. I haven’t received the offer through email yet, so does that mean I’m not targeted? I was targeted for the $500 Savings bonus over the summer, but deposit requirements were too high for me. I might wait until I receive the email and if I don’t just apply on the 29th anyway and hope for the best.
I was not targeted so I sent a DM through my retirement account and they said I was eligible. Told me to call the main number and ask for an agent. The CSR gave me an ID number to refer to (not sure if it one time use or not). I will call tomorrow & open the account and update.
Spoke with CSR:
1) Said that I needed to open the account first online b/c it was meant to go through the website that was linked to the offer email, They said they could put it through since I already had a TIAA account,
2) I opened the account online on the regular website. I am waiting for test deposits to be verified and then it would be funded.
3) They said they would email the marketing team and then the marketing team would add the code to my account. Then I would get the bonus if I met the terms.

Sounds like no longer targeted?

Still contains the targeted language: This offer is intended for addressees of mail and email correspondences only and is not transferable.
Lousy bank that won’t accept most ACH transfers as direct deposits and won’t answer questions regarding their qualifications. Avoid them.
Person to person ACH transfers *aren’t* direct deposits per the terms outlined by basically every bank. The fact that they often work is a loophole. Their actually enforcing that doesn’t make them a lousy bank. If you use a legitimate direct deposit per their terms and they don’t count that, that would be grounds to complain.
It’s honestly pretty crazy that most banks don’t bother to enforce this, online transfers between accounts code as WEB, payroll deposits code as PPD.
TIAA is not a small bank…….there are very BIG by assets
Not on the same scale as Chase/Wells Fargo
