Update 4/8/24: Reader Shawn reports that you can open a CD to become eligible for their checking and card products
Update 1/13/24: Reports are this no longer works
Original Post:
You can open a self-directed US Bank investment account to make yourself eligible for their checking bonuses and credit cards.
For those outside of the US Bank footprint, the bank allows us to apply online for their lower tier credit cards, but does not approve us via online application to apply for their checking account and their Altitude Reserve card.
Typically, the workaround is to apply for a lower tier card, and that gets you into their system as a customer, and you can subsequently get the checking account or Altitude. That does require using up a 5/24 spot on a card you don’t necessarily want.
Reddit user sherpderp1 gives a tip to help get in their system. US Bank offers a self-directed brokerage account which can be opened by anyone nationwide. Once the bank sees you as a customer, they’ll allow you to open their checking account and credit cards.
Note: this method does not seem to be working for everyone. YMMV.
This $300 checking bonus will be interesting to some. The Altitude Reserve signup bonus will interest some people as well. You should be able to apply for the checking bonus soon after opening the brokerage (worth waiting 24 hours to allow the system to update); to apply for the Altitude Reserve requires being a customer for 5 business days.
Note: the brokerage account gets hit with a $40 fee at year’s end if there were no trades on the account; set yourself a reminder to cancel that before year’s end or try to create some activity there. See also this comment and this comment.
I’m not in their footprints. So, I should open a CD account first, correct? Hard pull? TIA.
Out of footprint for US bank checking (VT) and was unable to open checking account. Opened 1 month CD ($500) and a few minutes later was able to apply. Approved instantly.
can someone describe how to open self directed brokerage? trying to open one for p2 so I can do a bank bonus.. I go to self directed brokerage sign up and then it asks to login if I have an account. Well, P2 doesn’t have an account to “streamline” the process but I don’t see a button to sign up. Did they remove online sign up for a brokerage account?
I am outside of the bank footprint but have a business CC. I applied with a personal email but was denied without chex being run. I then reapplied with my business email chex was ran and I was approved about an hour after applying.
I applied for checking and was denied. I am in TX. I opened the 7 month CD. I applied again 2 days later and was denied again. I called in to discuss denial and told application approved immediately over the phone.
Anyone know how long US bank usually takes to review an application for a CD? Seems like it’s been about a week now and I haven’t seen anything yet.
Any update? I just went pending. Pablo
Sorry for the late response! Yeah, I got an update through snail mail where I was denied due to being unable to identify me. I had some stuff frozen so that was probably why. I ended up just disregarding that and applied for the accounts I was after since I realized if you previously had an account with US Bank not long ago and still have an online profile with them, you have a good chance of opening a new account.
got denied twice for a checking account. Opened a $1000 C.D. and was approved.
Pretty specific, but I received a USB focus (non payroll) card from Step Up for Students (grants for school tuition) which made me eligible for USB products.
If I close my accounts with US Bank but have a past personal bank account with them will it still count as a relationship?
Seemed to work for me today, under those same circumstances – past accounts, but said I was an existing customer and it let me through and autofilled the code for me.
I am a URA with F-1 visa. Can I open a CD account and then apply for a checking account with the bonus in this way?
