[Update] U.S. Bank Business Cards Have Confusing ‘Central Billing Account’ (Bank of America, Wells Fargo)

(Update 8/18/24: multiple readers warn (1, 2, 3) that if you contact U.S. Bank about removing Central Billing it messes up your existing rewards and pending signup bonuses. And so I’d personally just leave the Central and use it as my main account, as discussed in the post below.)

(Update: readers note that Bank of America does a similar thing on their business cards which they call CORP account. And Wells Fargo also has something similar.)

A lot of us who signed up for a U.S. Bank business card gets confused about this so I thought it worth a post:

When you sign up for U.S. Bank business cards, the bank opens up two unique accounts for your card. One looks like a regular card account and the other is something called a “Central Bill Account.” That Central account has a separate account number, and feeds from the regular card account; any purchase made on the card account shows up as money owed on both accounts.

I believe the idea might be that the card account details are informational – something for the employee; you won’t ever see the bank say that the card owes anything since really it’s the business who owes the money, not the employee. On the other hand, the Central Bill Account is the business account which actually owes the money.

You’ll even see differing balances on the two accounts since any amount that was billed to you gets removed from the employee card side of things. (The card account only shows the new charges, even when the old charges have not yet been paid off, whereas the Central account shows the full balance, as any other bank would do it.)

The card account will show $0 minimum payment due, even when you have a minimum payment owed. You’ll even get a statement saying that you don’t owe any minimum payment, and if you don’t make the payment you’ll get hit with a late fee since you really do owe a minimum payment. Again, I believe the idea is that ‘you’ as the employee don’t owe anything since the business owes it, and that’s billed to the Central Billing Account of the business.

My advice: Just ignore the main card account and only use the Central Billing Account for everything, including statements. When you eventually close out the card, be sure to have the Central Billing Account closed out as well.

There’s another option to call in and have them remove the Central Billing Account, and then your card should operate normally. Multiple readers warn (1, 2, 3) that if you contact U.S. Bank about removing Central Billing it messes up your existing rewards and pending signup bonuses. And so I’d personally just leave the Central and use it as my main account.

For some reason I got this Central Billing Account only on my Triple Cash business card, not on my Leverage business which I signed up a few months earlier. Reader Shawn tells us that there’s actually an option to select during card signup whether to have this Central Billing feature or not.

When you have multiple U.S. Bank business cards it’s possible to set them up that they all feed into the same Central Billing Account for simpler bill management. For our readership, I’d suggest that most of us will prefer declining the Central Billing option. I must have mistakenly signed up for it when applying for the Triple Cash, but not when applying for the Leverage card (or maybe it wasn’t yet an option then).

In the image below, the top account is my Leverage card which works normally. The bottom two accounts are both the same Triple Cash card with two separate entries in the online login (and, confusingly, differing balances). Again, I just ignore the regular card and use only the Central Billing Account.

Hat tip to reader Gerald and beenthere for reminding me about this.

Does that give you the option to select a future date? I scheduled a payment for the due date with a rep, but I have received my bonus and that will be the last bill; I will ask them to delete the central billing account after I get a $0 balance bill.

To avoid pain and suffering: When you get approved and set up a new account online, USB prompts will ask a question regarding employees and statements/payments which I don’t remember exactly, but there are two options – I chose the top/first option for my three new USB Biz cards (Triple Cash, Leverage and Alt Connect) and that was a mistake – they all are set up with central billing.

It gets even worse – I just spent hours on the phone with various untrained agents to finally confirm that each card will require a separate login and profile to access the central billing for that card. There is no way to combine multiple different biz cards’ central billing under one login. So the Triple Cash central billing needs one login, the Leverage needs another, etc.

In terms of skipping the headache of multiple central billing accounts and paying by phone – that’s fine but payments can only come from a USB checking account, not an external account. If you want to pay from an external account you have to use central billing.

SO – when you sign up for a new USB Biz card, and go through the account set up – choose the second/lower option regarding employee cards and payment. (I hope someone doing this soon can respond with the exact wording!)

Also – if you are stuck with central billing, once you are logged into your central billing account, you can nickname the two accounts to clarify which is the central billing and which is the EE account. Click the “settings” type cog wheel and then choose “Manage Accounts” and you can nickname them to make it at least a tiny bit easier.

Another tip: you can link all your USB profiles so that you can log in once and then toggle between different profiles. Go to “Profile & Settings” at top > “Manage Profile & Settings” > “Linked Profiles” and add the other logins. At least that can save a bit of the hassle.

I asked USB to get rid of the central billing before it became clear that this would cause problems with my bonus. It seems that this also knocked my statement balance down to zero. I’m going to call and check, but it seems that I don’t have to pay in October.

I just got my October statement. It shows something called BALANCE MOVE FOR COMPANY BILLING CHANGE. I looked at the Interest Charge Calculation section and it has 0% APR for the balance that was transferred but 18.74% for a more recent charge. Since there’s supposed to be a 0% APR on purchases, it’s time to deal with their horrible customer service.

I spoke to a CSR today, who assured me that I won’t get charged interest. I guess time will tell.

I got charged interest on my November statement, so I called and they reversed it and supposedly fixed it. I got charged again on my December statement, and I also got socked with a $40 fee because the interest charge pushed me over my $3000 credit limit. This time the CSR put me through to her supervisor who spent 40 minutes fixing the problem (allegedly). I also mentioned that the rewards I had earned before the switch had disappeared, but she said nothing could be done about it. I didn’t push back because it wasn’t a lot of money. In any case, I got the $750 bonus without a problem, and I have an interest-free loan of $3000 for the duration of the introductory period. Bottom line is if you have central billing, leave it alone.

Anyone know how we can register for US Bank central billing? I have my rewards a mess now and need to file a CFPB complaint and their phone reps are useless

I don’t think my leverage had a central account, it was automatically added to my online profile? Is it somewhere else?

Make sure you register for a new account with your business card number. This will create a separate business login with the card as well as with your central bill account in it.

Ahh – I see. Is that mandatory or any benefit of that? Seems like for some, the points don’t go to the card account but to central billing. I see the points as available to redeem in my card account today.

Then you don’t need one. No idea if it helps get targeted for any business only offers probably not but who knows…

You might not have a central account.
I’m on my 7th US Bank biz card and I’ve never had one.
When I log onto the app there’s just one account per card.

My reward balance went to 0 at the statement cut. A rep at US Bank customer service says that the problem should correct itself after a second statement cycle and bonus points will show up again at the end of the quarter.

Anyone else heard the same thing or have experience here?

Rep on the phone said it would take 2 weeks for the team to review, so I filed a CFPB complaint because I was going to use the points to pay off my bill. Got my points a few days later. The manager ensured me that my points wouldn’t be lost when the statement posted on a recorded line and they were when the statement closed so I had a case.

thanks gonna take that as my final route if it doesn’t post after this. even the rep says 75% of his call is about this central billing account because no one understands – how can the average customer who’s busy running their small business understand any of this nonsense @ Malik

They really should get rid of it. It’s hard to pay our bills with it. My first business card didn’t have it so I don’t know why they recently added this. Hopefully they’ll get rid of it or correct the billing and reimburse people’s lost points without having to get a third party involved.
