Uber Partners with Venmo for Seamless Payment Option

Uber and Venmo announced today a partnership to have Venmo as a payment option directly in the Uber app. Venmo will be an option both for Uber rides and UberEats.

You’ll be able to use your Venmo balance or a linked credit card, debit card, or bank account to easily split the cost with family and friends. The option is set to go live in the coming weeks.

Press Release

Venmo found over 6 million payments tagged as ‘Uber’ in their description over the past year, making it a natural choice to integrate directly in the Uber app.

Uber is always looking for unique new ways to provide an even better experience to our customers. With so many of our riders and eaters already turning to Venmo as a way to pay a friend back for that last ride or meal, we’re proud to have built a seamless, easy-to-use connection between our apps.
Whenever businesses have advertised these kind of features in the past, it’s never actually worked to properly ‘split the charge.’ Instead, one person pays and the others send funds to that person’s account. Not sure if they did it correctly this time or it’s just a marketing gimmick.

Don’t see any exciting category bonus gains here on a regular basis. Venmo has been working to get 3x on CIP, but CIP should work to earn 3x on Uber directly due to the travel category. Anyway, this could be a convenient way of paying or splitting a ride. Paypal may have attracted a larger audience, but Uber is probably more after getting the chic and young feel of Venmo.

Used Venmo to pay Uber (Eats, but it looks the same to me — merchant “VENMO UBER”) with a CIP and I only got 1x.

Uber charges for splitting the payment. So I don’t understand why I would use split payment feature when I can just send a friend the money on Venmo

This is good but I already use gift cards or apple pay for uber.

Also, I always tag my payments using emojis on venmo. I wonder how many emoji-tagged payments there are on Venmo
