Our Verdict
Not sure how competitive United usually is on these routes, but I will say that the destinations are actually places I’d want to visit so that’s a plus. More to come

Since both Iceland and Portugal are in United’s European region, I tried unsuccessfully to build in a free stopover, LAX-KEF-OPO-LAX, at the discounted mileage price. Anyone have any ideas on how to add this in?
For this offer, “roundtrip” is defined as travel from an origin city to a destination city with return travel ending at the origin city, and with all segments on flights operated by United Airlines. A segment is defined as one takeoff and one landing. Open-jaw itineraries within the same region do qualify for the discount. Stopovers are not permitted.
Your KEF – OPO flight is probably not operated by UA.
is there any way to book one way with 20% discount?
Don’t think so since it’s only valid on round trip bookings.
can this be done on already booked but not yet flown awards where travel is coming up in a few weeks?
Ooh this looks interesting. Do you think we’ll see any other deals like this coming up? Planning a backpacking trip for the summer so I’d like to know if other European destinations might come up.
I might suggest checking icelandair flights to your destination, but otherwise I wouldn’t expect too much for discounted award flights to Europe in peak season. This is a pleasant surprise though with places I actually like, so maybe we’ll be lucky!
