Here is one to play this if the thought of Economy makes you cringe. I hate it. Buy the economy ticket on a flight that has Economy Premium Plus (better than Economy Plus). Upon purchasing the ticket you should get an offer to upgrade to Premium Plus for $625. Take it. That also puts you in a position for an upgrade to Polaris Business Class if you have United status. You can’t get a Polaris upgrade on points but you can with a paid seat. The Premium Plus payment does that. Good luck.

$625 for an award ticket in economy off season? You are bad at award travel

Purple seats are not the same as economy seats. Honestly, it’s not a bad price or strategy, especially if you need the PQP for status.

Only GS can upgrade award tix to Polaris, and it requires PlusPoints or MUA. For the rest of us, requires cash to upgrade award ticket.

If you want biz, don’t pay for two separate cash upgrades 👎

Premium Plus is stupid. I’ve received upgrades twice (AKL-SFO) and had less legroom than I would have had in bulkhead or emergency exit Economy Plus.

Interesting play, but not worth fees + $625 upgrade + 50k miles for offseason.
