I love Hawaii, it’s a mixed bag with locals, some are nice , some are outright rude. It does not ruin my vacation as most of my time is spent on the trails. If they want to be left alone, that’s fine with me, world is bigger than couple rocks in the pacific and Frankly Indonesia is waaay more beautiful.

“Fly to Maui for as low as 30,000 miles roundtrip”

I wonder what exactly those routes are that qualify for “as low as 30,000 miles”

Just booked one. They aren’t available for all flights/dates, but there are still some available late November – early December. My home airport doesn’t have direct flights to OGG anyways, so YMMV, but got 2 stops on the way there and 1 stop on the return flight.

Maui’s locals have said time and time again they do not want tourists or visitors to their island.

That’s weird- I’ve been hearing just the opposite. Tourism is the main driver of Hawaii’s economy. Everyone from the AP, NYT, NPR to even National Geographic confirmed that the overall feeling is that the people of Maui want (and need) tourists to return.. as of last month at least.

Are you seeing something more recent or from a different viewpoint?

yeah, I’ve heard the opposite of what you’re saying too. Check out the travel subreddit. There’s a loud but minority group who don’t want tourists but the overwhelming majority, from my understanding, is that they want tourists. How else do they support the economy in Hawaii?

Hawaii local. If you want to be conscientious of your tourism, there is a lot to consider. I have family that lost their home. It’ll take a LONG time for life in Lahaina to rebuild. Yes, you’re contributing to our tourism (arguably golden handcuffs), but you’re also contributing to hotels pushing out those affected by the fires because “tourism season is back” and they want the sky-higher rates earned from tourist vs FEMA payments. So there’s that dynamic playing too.

If you do decide to come, understand that we have our own culture here (aside from the continental US) and you have to respect it. Again, yes.. we need tourism; however, keep in mind that we do not appreciate the “tourist entitlement” people bring. You can act that way in the resort areas (because that’s their “job”), but don’t do it to the locals—FAFO. Learn about Hawaii’s history; have fun and enjoy, but bring an an open mind & heart.

Airport is OGG. I guess the real vacation itinerary would be to fly there, and then transfer to another island.
