United Increasing Checked Baggage Fees If You Don’t Prepay

This is a change that was first announced on February 21st and went into effect on March 6th but United has increased checked baggage fees as follows:

  • First checked bag will now cost $35 (up from $30)
  • Second checked bag will now cost $45 (up from $40). Flights from/to Canada will charge $50

There are two instances where these new fees won’t apply:

  • If you prepay for your checked baggage
  • If you purchased your tickets prior to February 21st, 2020

United last increased checked baggage fees in 2018.

This is the only reason I have the Chase United Explorer card – so I get free checked baggage for me and my wife on a flight. One round trip more than pays for the annual fee.

Anyone have experience with bringing on a carryon for free on basic economy tickets?
What about bringing on 2 personal items for no charge – laptop and backpack?

Per website 1st checked bag is $35. Not see where mentions if prepay then costs $5 less.

Well UAL CEO Scott Kirby was formerly in c-suites at the former airlines: America West and US Airways, most recently he left American Airlines to replace Oscar Munoz at the helm. AA has the most debt exposure of all the Legacy airlines (and probably at greatest risk of failing or going bankrupt or merging.

For good or bad he is a bean counter and probably, the reason AA exists today (for good or bad).

Kirby expects if the COVID19 is contained in next 60-90 days that it will take 18 months to recover.

Honestly, I respect the cuts to stay afloat over hemorrhaging cash – to need an even bigger bailout down the road.

For the first time, United is not leading this change. They are just following JetBlue who did the same thing a few months ago.
