Update 4/5/20: United has made it’s official announcement. Additional details:
- PQP requirements have been reduced by 50% for each status level
- Maximum PQP for United Explorer cards has been doubled, PQP for United Club cards has been quadrupled
- PlusPoints are being extended for six months for any that are set to expire on or before January 31st, 2021
- Travel certificates are now valid for 24 months (request a refund instead for cancelled flights)
- Award redeposit fees for travel through May 2020 are being waived
- Award redeposit fees for award tickets cancelled 30 days before departure are being waived for the rest of 2020
- It will be easier to earn status in 2021 for 2022 (more details to come)
Original post: Following on the heels of the Delta announcement, United has announced a number of extension measures:
- Elite status will be extended by 12 months (e.g status expiring 1/31/21 will now expire 1/31/22)
- United Club memberships will be extended by 6 months
- United will reduced the PQP requirements to earn premier status next year
Seems like this wasn’t necessarily planned by United as there is still no official announcement.
Hat tip to Dans Deals
I just tried to cancel an award reservation for a flight departing 6/24, and their online system is still trying to charge a redeposit fee, even though it clearly falls in the “more than 30 days prior” category. I hope this is just a glitch and they don’t have their systems fully set up yet. I’ll try again in a day or two…
They’ve got their system set up now; just successfully cancelled the flight with no redeposit fee.
If they gave the status away for free I still wouldn’t fly United
UNITED: Unknown Next Idea ‘Til Emulating Delta.
Will United be rolling over PQPs earned in 2021 for elite qualifying Statius in 2022, similarly to Delta?
That hasn’t been announced, so I doubt it but we don’t have the full details from United yet.
I’m Silver for another year. United is bestest ever.
hey judy. have you checked if your elite status already extended?
I checked mine, it still shows end of January 2021
United blog post and email alerts state that “The updates will happen automatically over the next few weeks — there’s nothing you need to do.”
Thanks Dave … I read the blog post. It also says that certificate will also be valid for 24 months instead of 12 months.
