Our Verdict
Nice discount if you can make the dates work for you and live on the east coast. A lot of people will have the United cards and readers might also have status from the Bilt promotion.
Crap, I missed the deal. Didn’t realize this was Jan 4 only 🙁
There’s surprisingly healthy competition on flights between Hawaii & the west coast. Alaska, Hawaiian, and Southwest generally have cheaper cash prices & more favorable mileage redemption. Even with this sale United is not competitive.
I literally searched from SFO to OGG an hour ago for next month, there are some for 19600 points RETURN. I have no status, no card. 12k compared to that is a negative 22% discount..
you must not have premier status
Booked this deal today, awesome fare. Got three tix for President’s Day week from the East Coast, valued at a staggering 5.2 cents/mile. Awesome use of 24K points/person! IAD-HNL direct, then HNL-IAH-IAD return.
Just did a little research… United did away with their mile redeposit fees as of 1 Jan, 2023. So essentially, all award travel with United is fully refundable up to day of travel. They will still charge a $125 redeposit fee for no-shows. I went ahead and booked a flight from Tampa to Honolulu for 15k miles. Pretty good flight too, only a 1 hour layover, 12 hours travel time total. If I decide to cancel, then so be it!
I see 12k on non-stop from NYC to Kahului during off-peak. On-peak fares are 13.9k.
I’d jump on this if I weren’t also working on the Bilt status match.
The key words are “up to”.
It works both ways (I live in HI and saw 15,000 miles legs leaving the state).
