Many states offer a few days/weeks during which their state sales tax is waived, typically in advance of an upcoming school year. There are typically more details on limits and eligible items so be sure to research the details of your state. We’ll list below the states we’ve seen for 2024 and we ask readers to chime in with whatever is missing.
- Connecticut – Aug. 18 – Aug. 24 (clothing and shoes under $100)
- Florida – July 29th through August 11th.(No sales tax on personal-use computers < $1,500, clothing <$100, school supplies <$50, and learning aids < $30.)
- Massachusetts – Saturday, August 10, and Sunday, August 11 (most retail items of up to $2,500 are exempt)
- Maryland – Sunday, Aug. 11 through Saturday, Aug. 17Â (no sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100; backpacks up to $40 is exempt)
- Ohio – begins July 30 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on August 8 (up to $500 each item is exempt)
- Texas – August 9 through August 11 (most shoes, clothes, and school supplies under $100 are exempt; no limit)
Stupid gimmicks. Whats the point of this, other than complicating life even more
Encouraging spending? Idk it’s a nice deal if you’re going to buy a computer.
Well I certainly enjoyed the savings. Didn’t complicate my life at all.
Every day is tax free day in tax free New Hampshire. Happy for those who get to experience for a weekend what I experience every day.
Enjoy your property tax rates!
TN has one

I’m in Florida. Chase/Apple charged me tax through their Shop Apple portal. I’ve been trying to get it refunded for a week now…seems unlikely.
This is probably the only way I’ll get the money back: https://floridarevenue.com/taxes/compliance/Pages/refunds.aspx
Check your final receipt because while it charged me initially, when I picked the item up in store the final amount was correct. I don’t know how this works on shipped items.
My orders directly from Apple were correct; they removed the tax once the order shipped. But Chase’s Shop Apple portal never refunded the tax, unfortunately.
Here is everything state put in a table format. Easy to read.

California could never.
Like 30 other states.
God I hate living in a state with the world’s 5th largest economy
Random, but ok.
Don’t need it, this is to incentivize spending. We never stop spending to begin with. I’m fine with people leaving to tax free states, at least the highways will clear up. Just can’t see leaving myself
CA would double the tax for the same week if they could
Amazon has charged me should i ask for refund?
It might depend on the state. For Ohio, even online purchases are exempt.
If you seek a refund on sales tax from Amazon, good luck! They randomly overcharge me sales tax on many (but not all) of my local grocery pickup orders. Getting a refund on that takes about 6 – 8 representatives and an hour of my time. It has been going on for 1½ years. I’ve been pursuing other solutions, but here, I just wanted to give you a heads up.
Check your receipt – We were erroneously charged Sales Tax and had to get them to remove it.
Florida – July 29th through August 11th.(No sales tax on personal-use computers < $1,500, clothing <$100, school supplies <$50, and learning aids < $30.)
Added thx
The Tax Foundation, who thinks sales tax holidays are stupid and bad policy, nevertheless publishes a full list of them here: https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/state/sales-tax-holidays-2024/
